Health and mobility have the potential to be the key cog in redesigning communities and transforming the way urban development and land use is approached. My colleagues, Greg Rodriguez and Kate Jack recently contributed to the Journal of Public Health and Emergency to share their perspective on how to achieve equity and resilience in any community. Hello dear community, please help me echo these words I would like to share. I believe it's crucial for individuals, organizations, and governments to understand and take ownership of two fundamental points in this world: 1. Investing (your time, voice, money, etc) in the right thing (education, health, infrastructure, climate, population, employees, children, peace, etc) is vital for everyone's success, including your own. 2. Collaborating towards our collective progress is essential for our global survival. When we invest in entities such as schools, hospitals, or even spend some money to go to our favorite holiday destinations, and fail to protect them in times of crisis, we are basically choosing to waste part of our lives and our investments that means choosing to deprive our future generations of the same opportunities we once enjoyed. I would like to encourage everyone to: Even if it is not money, try to do something Positive for this world per day or per week, for example giving advice or mentoring people or communities for their development. Let's work together to develop and safeguard our positive investments and ensure a sustainable future for all. #ProtectOurFuture #ProtectOurWorld #InvestInThisWorld #Collaboration #GlobalDevelopment #Survival #PositiveChange #LeaveNoOneBehind

Public transit’s importance has been weighing heavily on my mind, especially during my newly acquired 20-minute morning commute. Until last week, I lived within walking distance to work and most of my favorite after-hours third spaces. Living in a city that has historically underfunded its public transit options and fallen victim to extreme urban sprawl has unfortunately made personal vehicle use more important than ever. “Riding just one mile by bus in this country, on average, contributes 30% less to climate change than riding alone in a gas car.” Not to mention the physical activity boost from walking to transit stops – wins for public transit are also wins for public health. (BTW, can you tell I am loving the intersection between my background in environmental science and my new role as a public health communicator?) 🌱🚊 Every time I visit a city that seems to thrive, it’s almost always because its neighborhoods are connected by reliable, accessible transit service, leading to increased access to other city resources. Medical care, healthy food options, work, vital services, and particularly social connection all become more readily available when public transit does. Here’s to a global shift in investment, because public health 🤝 environmental health. https://lnkd.in/eE7arnxG

The VNiC-Health (Valuing Natural Capital in Communities for Health) Project is a Science Foundation Ireland-funded project exploring how to value natural resources in our communities for health and wellbeing. Natural capital is a way of thinking about the world's natural resources, such as soil, air, water, and all living organisms. The natural capital that we rely on has been severely impacted by changes to our ecological, bio-geo-chemical, and climate systems. Improved mental health and wellbeing are among some of the many health benefits we get from our natural environment, and spending time in nature makes people happier, improves their mood, and makes people value their natural capital more. #NaturalCapital #NationalChallengeFund #NextGenerationEU #DCU #RCSI

This week, in the Academic Minute: "The worker-led organization, Iron & Earth provides a powerful example of this approach. By partnering with fossil fuel workers and Indigenous Peoples, Iron & Earth supports climate solutions that counter environmental racism, promote dialogue and reconciliation, and lead to the design of ‘infrastructures of care,’ those systems and programs that most support a thriving, healthy, and equitable society at all times — not just during a crisis."
