The 𝐡𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞 of 𝐜𝐲𝐭𝐨𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧 discovery, its 𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐞 in plants, and its 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 in tissue culture👇🏻 ➡️ Haberlandt and van Overbeek's early observations between 1920 and 1940 suggested the presence of diffusible substances in plant tissues and coconut milk that stimulate cell division. These initial findings served as stepping stones for further investigation. ➡️ Decades later, in 1955, Skoog and colleagues achieved a significant breakthrough by isolating and crystallizing a "𝘤𝘦𝘭𝘭 𝘥𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘧𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘰𝘳" from sterilized herring sperm DNA. They named it kinetin due to its ability to promote cytokinesis, the cell division process. This discovery fueled the search for naturally occurring cytokinins within plants. ➡️ 1963 witnessed a key milestone when Letham isolated zeatin, the first natural cytokinin, from corn kernels. Subsequent research identified additional naturally occurring cytokinins and established the connection between kinetin and zeatin. This collaborative effort unveiled a new class of plant hormones, cytokinin, fundamentally changing our understanding of plant growth and development. Cytokinin plays multiple roles in plant growth and development, including: 🔹 Cell division and differentiation. 🔹Organogenesis 🔹Retard leaf senescence 🔹Promote de-etiolation response In plant tissue culture, cytokinins act as crucial regulators, synergistically promoting cell division with auxin, particularly in shoot apical meristems and callus cultures.
