Female founders deserve to be funded! Thanks Nell Gallogly from The New York Times for including me in such an important article.
Often, the lack of funding for female founders, specifically in women's health, ends in basic statistics.
- 💸 Less than 2% of total VC funding goes to companies founded solely by women.
- 📈 Female founders generate 35% higher returns on investment than male founders, particularly in women-led tech enterprises.
- 🔥 Female-founded companies maintain a lower burn rate than the overall market.
But behind these statistics are incredible women. These women battle every day for a cause they believe in. They master the art of juggling - running a business, raising a family, managing a household, maintaining friendships, and somehow being a coherent person at the end of the day. Yet, none of these aspects are ever highlighted in these statistics.
I love this piece because Nell Gallogly captures the reality of the current funding landscape. We are building things that will change the world. If the industry doesn't support us, how will innovation trickle down to women?
I'm super proud of all the women who are figuring it out and WILL be successful. And the best part? I got to be included alongside an incredibly impressive woman, who I am lucky to call a friend, Oriana Papin-Zoghbi!!

Rogue Women's Fund I is a 2020 vintage early stage venture capital fund managed by Rogue Women. The fund seeks to invest in women-led companies, who forge new paths and make possible, the impossible. They’re inspired by entrepreneurs that reject the status quo, and who are driven by market traction. They value ingenuity, insight and intelligence. Going from startup to a successful exit takes dedication, engagement, and clear expectations. They accelerate success with resources, values and vision. Women led companies have 63% higher returns and achieve 56% better operating results. Women led start-ups are 500% more likely to be a billion dollar company compared to businesses that are male led.

On International Women's Day, SteelSky Ventures proudly celebrates the extraordinary accomplishments of our female founders.
According to TechCrunch data, companies with at least one female founder raised just 26% of all venture funding last year, but our industry-leading portfolio companies are prevailing against the odds.
Each of our female-founded portfolio companies has raised at least $6 million to date, with several closing large rounds through the downturn. Motivo Health (Rachel McCrickard, LMFT) raised a $14 million Series A, Midi Health (Joanna Strober) raised a $25 million Series A, and Bend Health (Monika Roots, MD, FAPA) closed a Series A that brought Bend's total funding to $32 million. Collectively, female founders in the SteelSky Ventures portfolio have raised almost $1.5 billion.
Join us in recognizing female founders who are paving the way in women's health!

Did you know women receive less than 2% of venture capital funding?
Yesterday, I had the honor of watching the documentary "Show Her The Money," directed by Ky Dickens and produced by Catherine Gray, Dawn Lafreeda, and Wendy Ryan. This powerful film sheds light on this critical issue and underscores the urgent need for change in the venture capital landscape.
Following the screening, we had an enlightening panel discussion that emphasized the importance of cultural change through media representation and inclusive investment practices. The panelists addressed the challenges women face when raising capital for their startups and highlighted the significance of community support, resources, and strategies to combat fundraising exhaustion.
The conversation underscored the need for a supportive ecosystem to help female founders navigate the fundraising process and achieve success. Together, we can create a more equitable and inclusive venture capital environment.

Female Foundry has released the State of Gender Diversity in European Venture report for 2024 👯♀️
I was delighted to see that despite the challenging fundraising environment, female founders and female emerging fund managers in Europe prove resilient. Indeed, the report shows a growing confidence in female founders – 11% of total VC funds were directed to female-led startups, a tangible increase from last year. And it's not just about the startups. Female General Partners are raising substantial funds, with a noteworthy 76% increase from the previous year.
So, what's the game plan? We keep this party going! Investing in female founders isn't just good for stats ; it's smart business ✨
This is a call to action for all of us in the venture community to keep the momentum going. Let's continue to back these incredible founders and fund managers who are not only shaping the future of technology and business but also paving the way for the next generation of female entrepreneurs.

Here's a shocking stat for you 👇
Male founders of *Femtech* companies raise 8.3x more on average than female founders of femtech.
New figures from pitchbook show that in H1 of 2024 has been a record for femtech with a record $680m raised for femtech companies from VCs
BUT this has largely been driven by male founders raising waaay more than their female peers.
So let's get this straight:
A female approaches a VC with a company focusing on area that she has literal personal experience of but the VC turns her down.
A male founder approaches a VC with a company focussing on an area that he literally has no personal experience of and he raises successfully?
Make it make sense?!?!?

Meet The #VCs Who Just Raised $250 Million To Back #Women-Led Startups
Jenny Abramson and Heidi Patel, founders of Rethink Impact, raised $250 million for their third fund with the goal of #empowering#women#founders and addressing the persistent gender gap in venture capital funding. Recognizing that women receive just 2% of overall VC dollars, they built Rethink Impact to support female CEOs and create a more equitable entrepreneurial landscape by investing in women-led companies that are often overlooked.
The motivation behind their work is deeply personal—Abramson, inspired by her mother’s efforts to launch a women-focused fund in the 1990s, and Patel, an early leader in impact investing, are both committed to the belief that supporting women founders is not only a smart business strategy but essential for fostering a more inclusive economy. Together, they aim to reshape venture capital to be more inclusive, with a mission that extends beyond financial returns to create lasting change.
