Not just because it makes our hearts happy to see other women succeed, but because when I see numbers like this, it lights an inextinguishable fire: > Tech companies with all-women founders secured $3.2B from VC investors while all-male founding teams secured $114.8B > Businesses with mixed-gender leadership raised $44.7B (So, basically just having a male on your founding team gives you a $40B advantage.) If you're a female-founded business that has looked or is looking for funding, you know these numbers are very real. I am an avid tennis fan (yet poor tennis player) and I love the air of competition that descends on New York every summer. This year I was struck by the consistent coverage and discussion of the 50 years of equal prize money for both men and women players and the amazing work of Billie Jean King. As a part of the Open's celebration, there's been conversations and essays about "What Equality Means to Me." Reflecting on this question, I am reminded of the disparity in funding for all-female founding teams. In H1 2023, all-women founding teams raised only 1.6% of the capital allocated and in the current market, face an uphill battle. When I think about what equality means to me, particularly with respect to the amazing founders I get to speak to on a daily basis, I think about the democratization of access to capital, the reducing of the stigma that women invest in women just because they are women, and the removal of the notion that investing in all-women teams is a contrarian investment. With that, I'm excited to announce that Purple Sage Ventures will be hosting a panel as a part of #NYTechWeek on Early Stage Female Funding Strategies. Hear from female founders who have raised multiple rounds of funding (Seed to Series A), and learn what to do (and what not to do!) from funders who are investing in female-led teams. This panel will demystify the fund raising process and provide actionable insights for those raising capital.

In Jean Case's "Unlocking the American Dream" TedTalk, she explains how entrepreneurs are tireless risk takers whose innovative ideas initiate economic, developmental, and educational opportunity for everyone. Beyond that, she expands on how baffling it is that less than 1 percent of venture capital to support these bold visions go to women and women of color, EVEN THOUGH women are the fastest group of growing entrepreneurs, and both female and minority-owned businesses perform exceedingly well. Realizing how absurd this is when the numbers are there and in plain sight, the Fearless Fund has taken it upon themselves to close that gap and give female entrepreneurs an equal chance to take a piece of the American dream while positively impacting their communities at large. When you support those that are generally underserved, underrepresented, and underfunded, you help EVERYONE. Fortunately, I understand that, having the opportunity to witness the effect of female-founded organizations as a Venture For America graduate. The Fearless Fund understands that, as they are actively making strides to equalize the playing field. But alas, we have some folks that, not only don't understand, but they have filed a lawsuit to diminish an organization that ultimately helps everyone. As a Black woman, I'm not meant to receive ANY venture capital, and if I do, I won't receive more than 0.2%! Disgusting! Then the Fearless Fund comes along, simply wanting to level the playing field. They show that less than 1% of venture capital raised companies are founded by women of color, and the fund offered $20,000 grants to businesses owned by Black women. But then, racism kicks in! Screaming and Kicking! Fearless Fund was sued! It's been a non-stop battle! The court's decision has suspended the grant program while the case makes its way through the legal system. Please recognize that if you are reading this post and it's your first time learning of this, then recognize the privilege in that. This means that you are not directly impacted, therefore, it's not top news. But now that you know and if you care, and understand the stark inequity in this, 1. Share this post and bring more attention to this story! 2. Call on Congress and fill this form, and invest in Black women founders.
