Parents often ask if local honey may help with #SeasonalAllergies. The answer is: the data is limited. Some studies have found no difference in allergy symptoms in patients eating local raw honey regularly. Others have shown that certain types of honey like birch pollen honey may make a small difference in symptoms. And when there is a benefit, the amount of honey that it takes is A LOT more than what you or you child is realistically consuming daily. The thinking is that local honey exposes your body to allergens (like pollen) in small amounts over time, making it less for you to have allergy symptoms. You may have heard to a similar approach referred to as 'desensitization.' So, is it worth a try? Our advice: 1. Honey is never safe for babies less than 1 year old because of the risk of botulism (their digestive systems can't move the bacteria that causes botulism through their body quickly enough that it is safe until they are older than 1) 2. If you do try local honey for an older child, remember that if you do see any improvement, it will likely be small (and opt for honey that is likely to include pollen types from trees, grasses and weeds that cause allergies like birch tree honey instead of regular honey made from flower nectar, which isn't a common allergen) 3. Honey IS useful for cough symptoms from a cold for children >1 (we'll post more on this later)! 📞 917-746-2455 📧 [email protected] 💻 www.ellistonpediatrics.com #ellistonpediatrics #psa #peds #pediatrics #pediatrician #nycpediatricians #nyc #concierge #conciergemedicine #medicine #nycpediatrichousecall #weloveourpatients #wecometoyou #housecalldoctor #ues #uppereastside #uws #upperwestside #uptownnyc #downtownnyc #manhattanmoms #pedsofinstagram #health #healthy #staysafe #honey

Early-life daycare attendance might be associated with a reduced risk of asthma and allergic diseases, according to a study. This finding suggests that exposure to a diverse range of microbes in daycare settings could potentially benefit immune system development and reduce the risk of developing asthma and allergies later in life. #Daycare #Asthma #AllergicDiseases #ImmuneSystem #Microbes
