Martin Lewis from MoneySavingExpert.com made a brilliant speech yesterday receiving an award from the Royal Television Society. It really resonated with me and provided another reminder why we started Deli.
📢 "Campaigning journalism isn't just to expose the story, but to engage viewers so that they can take action and improve their own lives."
💡 It's not just about resolving the immediate issue (in our case, helping people out of debt) but about empowering individuals with the tools, education, and access they need to independently manage their finances, preventing future problems. It's the classic case of teaching a person to fish without showing them how to prep the rod.
📢 "I found myself being an intermediary between the government and the public - telling the government what was going wrong with the public... and then trying to explain the government's support to the public so they could access it."
💡 Any business that promotes lending or spending carries the responsibility to ensure their customers are well-informed, making decisions that won't compromise their financial health or overall well-being. When the financial shocks do happen they also have a responsibility to provide necessary support.
📢 "We've had a cost of living crisis where people had to choose between heating and eating."
💡 No need for commentary here... it's just bonkers that this is a reality, especially given the record profits some companies are posting

📢 "I don't need any more work, but I would love some bloody competition."
💡 The responsibility shouldn't lie with journalists or MoneySavingExpert.com... we (I guess the finance industry) should all be doing such a bloody great job that theres no longer a need for them.
