Did you know that despite being one of the few sports in the world where men and women can compete together, no woman has raced in Formula 1 since the 1970s?? I will admit, perhaps due to being born 2 decades after Lella Lombardi competed in the F1, that I had no idea! What does this tell you? Women are drastically under represented in Motorsports and perceptions and biases need to change. Across 1000 FIA World Championship races since 1950 British Grand Prix, only five female drivers have competed in the qualifying rounds of a Formula 1 Grand Prix. This points to an urgent need for collective action to address the challenges that are holding female talent back and the issues that are preventing many women from feeling included in the sport. However, change is being driven (excuse the pun), by women, for women.... Having recognised this disappointing gender disparity, Charlotte Tilbury has announced its first-ever global sports sponsorship: becoming the first female-founded brand and the first beauty brand to sponsor F1 ACADEMY™️ which is an ambitious new project from Formula 1 to develop and prepare female drivers to progress to higher levels of competition. Go on Charlotte Tilbury! This sponsorship solidifies my love for the brand even more. Changes designed (in part) with women in mind have to be welcome, so kudos to Robert Reid and all those at the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile and their partners for this important work. Great to see too that Tatiana Calderon was involved in the development of the new model, and am now fascinated to see how it goes, whether it has the desired impact and to understand the data it might throw up about performance against its predecessor. Perhaps a bigger challenge however lies further down the chain. As our recent 'Inside Track' report highlighted, the tiny proportion of female drivers to male in any given series is the single largest determinant of female success. You can do lots of things at once of course, but this (growing the base) has to be a huge focus for the sport more broadly. We've got a much narrower focus at >= More than Equal, where we're working on finding talented young female drivers from around the world and giving them the training, resources and support they need to become elite drivers capable of winning in Formula 1 - but we'll support & shout about any initiative that seeks to grow female participation. Max Verstappen, a 3-time Formula One World Champion, has raised doubts about Susie Wolff's F1 Academy and the effectiveness of its efforts to include more women in the program. His input is important, as he is a prominent figure in the sport with much influence and experience. He is appreciative that the Academy is paying more attention to women, but he worries that there is no next step for them to get them into Formula 1. He fears the car may be significantly too slow for them to fully be prepared for Formula 1.
