You know you don't *have* to put your heart and soul into every RFP, right? I'm looking at you A students. As a very wise admiral said to my husband (Mark Van Waes) when he was his XO in response to "how much time should I spend on this, sir?"....."Spend exactly the amount of time it deserves." Figure out how much time that specific proposal deserves ... counting your time as $$$. You also don't have to give them everything they ask for. I answered an RFP for leadership training recently that asked for a detailed, timed agenda, all the training materials, and all the leave behinds. a) why, so you can take my free labor and run with it yourself? 🤔 b) I tailor everything I do to the client and all I know about you so far is your RFP -- if you want a boxed product, sign them up for a generic leadership course at the nearest business school. So, for that request, I told them how I generally structure these trainings and what modules I would cover but that further details are proprietary and only given to paying clients and that if they'd like more insight into what I do and who I am, they can feel free to schedule a free 30 minute consultation. Will I get that one? Probably not. But I'm not feeding the beast with more free work and enabling an entitlement to hard-earned IP. No. More. Unpaid. Labor. No more stealing IP.

To be an effective leader, everything that you or your team do should be supporting a particular strategic vision or direction. If there is none or it’s not clear, then you or your team may be doing things that might waste your, your team’s, and your organization’s time, effort, and resources. That’s why “Planning” is the very first of the 4 major functions of leaders/managers because creating clear vision is a fundamental part of that function. Clear vision will give direction, guidance, and should motivate you and your team to accomplish tasks, projects, milestones for the team and the organization. Without clear vision, they maybe moving in circles, might give a feeling that they are lost and confused, that leads to demotivation and performance issues, and eventually disengagement. Providing clear vision should be your first priority in any situation - working on projects, managing changes and conflicts, finishing a particular task, improving performance, and most especially during crisis. Your team needs a clear vision in everything that they do. If you fail to do this as a leader, you are setting up your team for failure or even something worse. That’s why lack of clear vision makes one a “weak leader”.

'Accidental Managers', they're everywhere. What is an accidental manager? The CMI first used the term, talking about managers who are promoted simply because they are popular, good at their job, or [even] happen to be [simply] available to take charge. The report revealed that 82% of managers who enter management positions have not had any proper management and leadership training – they are “accidental managers”. Why does this frustrate me? Firstly because I've seen accidental managers, dozens of times in businesses, get frustrated, demotivated and resentful, of the position they hold. And secondly, because it's easy to resolve, by leaders taking the time to invest just a little, in the skills that your best 'doers' need to become inspiring managers.
