Tuesday July 9, 2024 was Black Women's Equal Pay Day, the day that symbolizes how long into this year the average black woman has to work to earn as much as the average man earned last year alone. It's an astounding 7 months of extra work. We, companies, managers, colleagues, employees, must do better. We must challenge ourselves to identify our biases, both conscious and unconscious. We must have the difficult conversations on privilege and what true equality means. We must advocate for more black women in leadership roles. This starts today. Speak up when you see inequality. Mentor a black female colleague. Sponsor someone whose voice needs amplifying. Conduct regular and thorough pay audits to identify any discrepancies or biases in compensation. Establish transparent criteria for pay scales, promotions, and bonuses that are applied consistently across all employees. Hold leaders and managers accountable for fostering an inclusive environment. Collaborate with organizations and groups that work towards closing the pay gap and supporting Black women in the workforce. Don't stop at words take action. Together, we can eliminate the black women's equal pay gap, but only with focus and perseverance. Black women, deserve equal pay for equal work. Today we observe Black Women’s Equal Pay Day, a symbolic reminder of a real and persistent problem. Women are still paid less than men and the pay gap is even larger for Black women and other workers of color. The EEOC’s data dashboard featuring aggregate 2017 and 2018 pay data reported by more than 70,000 employers representing 100M workers showed pay disparities based on race and sex in almost every industry at the national level and in nearly every state. Black employees generally were in lower median pay bands than white employees in the same industries and job categories and Black women were paid the least, along with American Indian or Alaska Native women. The EEOC is committed to combatting pay discrimination and advancing equal pay for Black women and all workers. Despite their undeniable talents and unwavering dedication, they have often been unjustly compensated less than their counterparts. This day, falling months after the general Equal Pay Day, symbolizes the extended time Black women must work into the following year to earn the same wages as their white male colleagues. As a law firm committed to equality and justice, we recognize the urgency of closing the wage gap and implementing transformative change. Ahead of Black Women's Equal Pay Day, this Monday, July 8th, it’s crucial to address the pay discrimination that denies Black women their rightful earnings. Here’s how companies can better support and advocate for Black women in the workplace: - Conduct pay equity audits. - Revamp performance management processes to ensure that performance evaluations are fair and unbiased. - Create and promote pathways for career growth specifically designed to support Black women. - Establish regular, transparent salary reviews and adjustments to ensure Black women receive proper compensation. Lean In reports that over the course of a Black woman’s career, the lost income adds up to almost a million dollars compared to white men. By taking these steps, companies can begin to address this disparity and reduce the lifetime income loss for Black women.

July 9th was Black Women's Equal Pay Day and it is important to acknowledge the persistent pay gap faced by Black women in the workplace. The Issue: Black women, on average, must work until July 9th to earn what white men made in the previous year. This translates to a significant financial disadvantage and underscores the ongoing fight for equal pay in America. We can't settle for the status quo. Here's what we can do: 1️⃣ Educate Ourselves: Understand the pay gap, its impact, and reflect on whether this is acceptable to you. Resources like the National Women's Law Center provide valuable information. 2️⃣ Advocate for Change: Speak up about pay equity and support policies that promote fairness. 3️⃣ Champion Transparency: Ask employers about pay scales and salary ranges to ensure equal compensation for equal work. 4️⃣ Negotiate with Confidence: Do your research and be prepared to negotiate your salary with data and evidence to support your worth. The answer is always “no” to the questions you never ask. Together, we can build a workplace where Black women are valued and compensated fairly. Promote Transparency: Be open about pay scales and criteria for raises and promotions. Implement Bias Training: Educate employees and managers on unconscious bias and how it impacts decision-making. Support Career Development: Invest in mentorship and sponsorship programs specifically for Black women. Enforce Equitable Hiring Practices: Ensure diverse hiring panels and equitable recruitment processes. It is important that we all work together to close the gap and ensure fair pay for Black women!
