This story made for a great discussion recently so I thought I would share.
At 27, I transitioned from FT coding to a Medical Staff Coordinator at a small facility; about 140 beds, marking the beginning of an incredible ride.
Back then, my job was like a puzzle, full of challenges and opportunities. I served as the crucial link between departments, hospital leadership, medical staff, department chiefs, and the physician executive board chair. Little did I know that the trust they placed in me would become a cornerstone of my career. My daily tasks involved physician meetings, credentialing, privileging, and building strong relationships. The CEO liked that I was good at analyzing industry trends, dealing with data, and forecasting early on as I have done for many since that time. I call it seeing the future.
But it wasn't all smooth sailing. I quickly learned the art of not taking things personally, especially during heated board meetings or when addressing concerns from passionate physicians. My role also entailed tasks like ensuring safety, compliance, and evaluating risk. Remember, I did say small hospital.
As I look back, I'm grateful for every twist and turn in that journey. Those early experiences were the building blocks of my professional growth. It wasn't about climbing the career ladder; it was about embracing challenges and turning them into opportunities to learn and improve. My next challenge came when a colleague called me to start a Health Information Technology program and I interviewed and accepted.
Recently, I had the privilege of sharing these experiences with a group of remarkable students. I spoke about how this role transformed me into the leader I am today and offered them guidance on navigating their own career paths. I continue to draw upon these experiences to better myself and support others as they embark on their career journeys.
Reflecting on my path from a Medical Staff Coordinator to where I am today, I'm filled with gratitude for the lessons, the ups and downs, and the continuous growth. It serves as a reminder that our careers are ever evolving, and it's the challenges that mold us into the professionals we become.
Here's to the journey, the growth, and the unwavering commitment to becoming the best version of ourselves.
