April was full of activity for Greenwave Aotearoa. We recently posted about our latest outplanting event. And we’ve since had another eventful gathering of our team for the mass spore and seeding day at our Precess Point Hatchery. Spore release & seeding is the initial and crucial step in seaweed farming, in which mature reproductive seaweeds disperse thousands of spores into water which settle onto substrate to begin the growth of new seaweed plants. With a lot of new talent in the team, this was the first time we had the opportunity to work closely side by side. While collecting critical metrics such as sorus processing rates and man hours required for mass seeding events, the hatchery was buzzing as we shared knowledge from our various experiences and spoke of ideas for the future. Our two hatcheries are collaborating to churn out high-quality sporophyte-laden spools of seedlings. And we will continue mass seeding days in order to supercharge our 2024 farming season. — Greenwave Aotearoa exists through the innovation of EnviroStrat - an environmental advisory, blue economy impact investor, and creator of game changing nature-positive businesses that foster regenerative ecosystems, communities, and economies. Interesting for anyone working on #oceans and or #regenerativeagriculture focussed companies. Rarely you see seas and land connecting. We should see that much more! Why do we always talk about #regenerativeagriculture on land only? We rarely talk about the connection to the oceans and of course #regenerative ocean farming. #farmers #soil #water #climatechange

🚜 Today we would like to highlight the work of one of our flagship portfolio projects, Blaston Farm in Leicestershire. Our work with Blaston began when we signed a new, pioneering agreement with Philipson Estates – the owner of Blaston Farm - for the offtake of soil carbon certificates. Independently verified by ecometric ltd, this was the first UK project to generate certificates based on measured, high-density direct soil sampling. The project also provided a new income stream for the farm following the UK’s exit from the European Union. The farm adopted regenerative agricultural practices including the direct drilling of arable crops, continuous soil cover and systematic crop rotation. Such investment in regenerative agriculture offers numerous benefits for both climate and agricultural productivity: 🔹 Soil fertility can be maintained via the spreading of cattle and sheep manure. This has allowed Blaston Farm to reduce its use of nitrogen fertiliser by 26 percent. 🔹 Increasing the soil organic matter boosts its ability to hold nutrients and water. As a result of regenerative agricultural methods, Blaston Farm has seen a reduction in runoff, meaning less pollution and erosion in the nearby areas. 🔹 In a state of better health, Blaston’s soil captured approximately 5,000 tonnes of CO2e between 2020 and 2021. 📷 Blaston Farm Hylton Murray Philipson David Wright #SoilCarbon #RegenerativeAgriculture #CarbonCapture
