What happens when we restore nature? 🌳
The Loess Plateau was once covered in dense forests and grasslands. But thousands of years of farming intensified by the growing population and therefore demand for food left the area severely degraded and eroded.
Something had to be done.
In 1994, a programme of restoration began with significant investments to safeguard water resources, ensure food security, and promote sustainable rural development.
Today, large areas of the Loess Plateau have been restored through a mix of terracing and reforestation, engaging local communities in restoration efforts, respecting cultural practices, and ensuring sustainable livelihoods, as well as water management.
The transformation has benefited millions by improving food security, reducing poverty, and enhancing local ecosystems and highlights just how important safeguarding ecosystems are for the future of our habitats.
