Are nature-based solutions too good to be true? We hear the terms nature-based solutions, voluntary standards, and certification for conservation a lot, but do we really know what they mean and how they really work on the ground? Don't miss this critical conversation later this morning - join us virtually or in person on 28 June to unlock the power of the wild through powerful voices with tangible experience, including Christine Lippai (Wildlife Friendly Enterprise Network), Deborah Vorhies (FairWild Foundation) , Sally Gouldstone (Seilich), Zahra Osman (neo botanika), José F. González-Maya, Ph.D. (ProCAT Colombia/Internacional), and Khilendra Gurung (Himalayan Bio Trade). The opening remarks will be by Anastasiya Timoshyna (TRAFFIC), event moderation by Francis Vorhies (African Wildlife Economy Institute), and closing remarks by Ray Victurine. 📍 Email Sheillah Munsabe to attend in person: [email protected] 🖥️ Link to attend online: https://lnkd.in/dPuPCEfu

Join us on 31 October, 3pm GMT for a webinar to mark the launch of an urgent programme to conserve the Mexican goodeids – a highly threatened and remarkable group of fishes. Goodeids are viviparous, that is, they give birth to live young. Many are beautiful and highly sought after amongst collectors. With approximately 90% of the 40 species of Mexican goodeid threatened with extinction, they are also one of the world’s most at risk groups of fishes. Fortunately, experts from the Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo, Chester Zoo, Goodeid Working Group, Shoal Conservation, and the Freshwater Conservation Committee have written an action plan to bring the goodeids back from the brink of extinction and be given the chance to thrive. A diverse panel of experts will discuss why the goodeids are significant, share case studies of successful conservation attempts, and highlight what can be done to save them. Save the date. It’s sure to be a fascinating event. Webinar link 👉 https://lnkd.in/ehY9bJUG #PlanG Topiltzin Contreras Michael Köck Harmony Patricio

Experts from Chester Zoo are throwing a spotlight on conservation at the IUCN’s first-ever World Species Congress – a global event to inspire action for species conservation. 🌍 For the first time, conservationists from around the world are joining forces to highlight some of the planet’s rarest species and what’s being done to protect them to inspire everyone to do their bit to help reverse the current biodiversity crisis. 🌲 Join us at 11am on Wednesday 15th May as we champion some of the world's most threatened species. We’ll tell you more about how our experts care for native and exotic species, how looking at poo is helping to save Eastern black rhinos from extinction, and the impacts of palm oil on tropical rainforests, local people, and unique species like orangutans. Most importantly – we’ll highlight the everyday actions young people can take to help prevent extinction. #worldspeciescongress #conservation

I'm honored to have contributed to a new global scan of #CulturalKeystoneSpecies co-authored with friends and colleagues, including Giulia Mattalia, Alex McAlvay Irene Teixidor-Toneu Jessica Lukawiecki Jeffrey Sandra Diaz and many others, published today in the journal People and Nature. This new paper addresses the cultural significance of wildlife to Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities and their stewardship under customary forms of conservation governance. We conclude the paper with a call to support Indigenous-led conservation actions in the implementation of global conservation agreements, such as the #GlobalBiodiversityFramework. The paper is #OpenAccess and can be read here: https://lnkd.in/gGypM3Ji

CEIGRAM-UPM has just joined a new European project, called TransWILD: Transformative wildlife management to enhance biodiversityprotection and ecosystem services provision in shared and protectedmulti-use landscapes across Europe. The recovery of formerly rare wildlife populations (i.e. crane, wolf, beaver andothers) in Europe is a remarkable wildlife conservation success story, and yet presents daunting challenges for human–wildlife coexistence in shared cultural landscapes, leading to trade-offs such as crop and livestock damages, illegal wildlife killing, and ensuing social conflicts. TransWild’s objective is to challenge the current human-wildlife interaction paradigm and identify alternative concepts to sharing space that enable sustainable human-wildlife interrelations. The main researcher at UPM is Ana Iglesias.

https://lnkd.in/e3qsd8QA Kent Plan Tree 🌳 is joining forces with Butterfly Conservation 🦋 to record White-Letter Hairstreak (WLH) butterflies and Elm Trees across Kent. Mature Elm numbers have massively declined due to Dutch Elm Disease, and as these trees play a vital role in the WLH lifecycle, they, too, have declined. We would appreciate your help collecting photographs and locations of both species. You can do this on a walk in one of our target areas or anywhere across Kent. Test your spotting skills, and don’t forget your binoculars as the WLH fly high in the canopy. Upload your Elm records to iNaturalist, and If you’re lucky enough to spot the rare WLH, try to capture its fine ‘W’ markings and upload your photo to iRecord Butterflies. If you’re unsure about the butterfly species use the comment box to describe your sighting. ATREE’s Darjeeling Community Conservation Centre is conducting research on the keystone avian species of the forests of Darjeeling, woodpeckers. The study aims to understand the response of woodpecker communities to different forest management regimes and test the reliability of woodpeckers as indicators of bird diversity in differently-managed forests. The study led by Aditya Pradhan and Sarala Khaling also aims to explore preferences of foraging niches of woodpecker species in the differently-managed forests.
