🐝🐝🐝 Today we celebrate World Bee Day, honoring the tireless guardians of nature who play a crucial role in pollination and the preservation of our ecosystems. At Outcrop Silver’s subsidiary, #MineralesSantaAna, we recognize their value and support the establishment of the Falan & Frias School Apiary, an initiative aimed at protecting and promoting bee health. To date, 4 apiaries have been set up in the villages of La Lajosa, El Refugio, La Rica, and La Noria, with a total of 60 hives and a population of over 3 million bees. These bees benefit the rural population of Falan by pollinating their crops, which helps improve production and, consequently, their income. Additionally, the School Apiary has trained 78 people in beekeeping, thereby strengthening local knowledge and skills in this area. Bees not only provide us with honey and other apiary products but also serve as key indicators of the health of our environment. Therefore, it is vital to protect them and promote their conservation. 🌼🐝 Join us today in raising awareness about the importance of bees and taking action for their preservation. 🌍This Earth Day, we're shining a light on Kenwood Vineyards, where we have a multi-year initiative to protect pollinator sanctuaries which are vital for maintaining natural ecosystems.    The team have transformed non-native grasslands into protected habitats, providing essential support for endangered species like the Western Monarch butterfly, as well as native bees, and other crucial pollinators. 🦋   Our vineyards are also home to many permanent honeybee hives and dedicated areas adorned with pollinator-attracting plants such as milkweed and native wildflowers. These efforts not only provide habitats for a variety of pollinator species, but also underscore our dedication to preserving biodiversity and supporting the delicate ecosystems that sustain us.   #EarthDay #Sustainability #KenwoodVineyards #PRWLife #Wine

This World Wildlife Day, we bring attention to wildlife that seldom comes to mind when one hears the word. Wildlife refers to fauna AND flora, and each provides services to all living things and are equally important. AWEI has been hosting dialogues on what is needed for the development of a sustainable wildlife economy in Zimbabwe and last Thursday's session focused on commercialising the use of wild plants. Next week, we will focus on certifying the sustainable use of wild species. Zimbabwe, with its rich biodiversity and cultural heritage, boasts an array of indigenous wild foods that have sustained generations. These offer unique flavours, nutrition, and a connection to the land. Let’s explore some of these wild foods: 1. Shambahuro: Also known as Piliostigma thonningii, its fruits are readily available during their season. 2. Masekesa: These fruits, found on the Vitex payos tree, are fresh and succulent. 3. Magwingwiziri: The Azanza garckeana tree bears these delightful fruits. 4. Hubva: Another name for Vitex payos, it produces tasty wild fruits. 5. Matohwe: The Azanza garckeana tree yields these flavorful treats. 6. Chechete: Found on the Mimusops Zeyheri tree, these fruits are a local favorite. 7. Makwakwa: These fruits perch high in trees and are prized for their unmatched taste. 8. Matamba: From the Strychnos spinosa tree, these fruits are also part of Zimbabwe’s wild bounty Despite their abundance, many indigenous fruits rot on the ground due to a lack of awareness about their nutritional value, while others are used unsustainably and illegally. Today is World Bee Day. They play a fundamental role in our ecosystem - bees, and other pollinators help maintain biodiversity and therefore ensuring the production of nutritious food, however due to habitat loss, and climate change, pollinating insects are struggling to survive. As a business, Colas is committed to enhancing biodiversity within our depots, projects, and local communities and in doing so we actively contribute to the preservation of bees and other forms of wildlife. Through efforts and as part of our wider commitment to enhancing biodiversity, Colas has taken significant steps to support bee populations. Last year, our Leeds contracting unit introduced two bee hives to the depot, providing a safe habitat for the vital pollinators and the team at Colas Ireland have also established Bee Hives on some of their sites. Additionally, we have planted native wildflowers across multiple project sites. Wildflowers play a crucial role in supporting bees and other pollinators; food, shelter, and a place to rest. By taking action, we are able to create environments that support the health and sustainability of bees, and other pollinators, contributing to a balanced, and thriving ecosystem. As we strive for harmonious relations with nature, addressing the human-elephant conflict emerges as a critical imperative for successful coexistence. It's a concern that transcends environmental groups and authorities, calling for collective and creative solutions. 🐘 In my recent research on the human-elephant conflict (solutions), I came across the inspiring work of the ⚡Sri Lanka Wildlife Conservation Society (SLWCS) and their 'Project Orange Elephant'. "Our orange trees mask the smell of crops stored in homes and provide a natural deterrent that helps prevent elephants from raiding farms, therefore reducing the chance of conflict between the farmers and elephants. It also provides a sustainable, supplementary income for the farmers. We use an orange variety with the highest demand in Sri Lanka, which is supplied to the largest supermarket chain, thereby creating an additional income to support the farmers and make up for any crop losses if crop raiding does occur." - SLWCS Projects like these often involve a combination of community engagement, education, and innovative techniques to mitigate conflicts and foster harmonious relations between humans and elephants. 🌍 By combining education, engagement, and inventive techniques, they pave the way for sustainable solutions and promote mutual respect between humans and elephants.
