Last week, Kijabe Environment Volunteers (KENVO) took a step towards a greener and more sustainable future with the Community Livelihood Improvement Program. Local farmers were provided with avocado tree seedlings, nurturing a thriving environment around the Southern Aberdare Forests. At KENVO, we are dedicated to making a positive impact on both our community and the planet. These tree seedlings are more than just plants – they represent hope, growth, and a brighter future. By giving back to the earth, we're also taking a stand against climate change, contributing to the global tree cover and its incredible ability to combat environmental challenges. We are immensely grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with our wonderful community in fostering sustainable livelihoods and preserving the beauty of the Southern Aberdare Forests. Empowering Communities, Preserving Nature: Kasese Tree Growers & Timber Traders Cooperative's Inspiring Initiative In the face of environmental challenges, community-led solutions can be a powerful force for change! Kasese Tree Growers and Timber Traders Cooperative, with support from WWF under the "Resilience for People & Biodiversity" project, has taken a remarkable step towards preserving the Rwenzori Mountains National Park. By establishing a nursery bed, they've enabled local communities to plant and nurture their own forests, reducing pressure on the national park. This initiative showcases the impact of collaborative conservation efforts and community empowerment. As these trees grow, so do the hopes for a sustainable future! WWF buys the seedlings 🌱 from the Cooperative, working with the District Local Government, the seedlings are distributed to the interested farmers at a free cost. During the second year of the Native Plant Month Initiative, The Garden Club of America secured Native Plant Month proclamations, resolutions, or laws in [48 states and the District of Columbia]. The goal of Native Plant Month Initiative (NPMI) is to increase awareness of the critical role native plants play in supporting a healthy environment, helping wildlife and pollinator populations thrive, reducing the use of pesticides and fertilizers, cleaning air and water, and so much more. The GCA hopes the NPMI will encourage people across America to plant more native plants in their yards, public spaces, and business properties. Don’t plant trees this World Environment Day (WED)! Planting trees on World Environment Day is a good way to celebrate. However, it often gets limited to just one day. What happens to the plants the next day, week or year? They need to be looked after and protected from various elements to ensure their survival in the initial months. Our partners advise that tree plantation drives are good. But, they need to be planned and managed by experts. Experts can advise on the species of plants, location and the best time to plant the trees. Saplings need to be nurtured and protected in the first 2 years of being planted. So, this WED, don’t join a plantation drive just because it is cool to post on social media. Pledge the trees on this day. Plant it when the time is right. Happy #RewildingDay! A great day to remind ourselves that no matter where we live, we all rely on those who work and protect rural areas. City life and country life are connected. 5 reasons why we believe that wild harvesting is key for rewilding: 🌱 Plants are key to any ecosystem. They feed both wildlife and humans. Any changes to plant sustainability could greatly impact the entire ecological pyramid. 🌱 60% to 90% of ingredients in medicinal and aromatic products come from wild plants. 🌱 Many rural and indigenous communities depend on wild plant collection for their health and income. This includes rosehip harvesters in Serbia and frankincense collectors in Somaliland. Without a decent income from wild harvesting, these communities risk overharvesting and losing their younger generation. 🌱 At FairWild Foundation, we assess risks to wild plants and ensure they are sourced responsibly. When wild harvesting is sustainable, everything benefits: the environment, local communities, and consumers. 🌱 We, as consumers, can make sure our products don't harm biodiversity and that harvesters are treated well. If we demand it, companies will pay more attention to where their ingredients come from. The more we care about the impact and origin of products, the more companies will too! As we enter the month of May, we start to see a lot of discussion around the movement #NoMowMay. Here is my RTE Brainstorm piece from yesterday afternoon (currently trending as most read!) that explores the impact that the initiative can have on our plants, bees, butterflies, and even ourselves. The declining numbers of many species that are dependent on wildflowers are startling, so it can become such an important month to support nature. But in the piece, I make the argument that this doesn't have to be just May. Even maintaining a small area of unmown lawn all year round can have substantial positive impacts to the local biodiversity. https://lnkd.in/dR4Hg-T8

🐝 Pollinator of the week = Orange Tip Butterfly 🌸 Plant of the week = Cuckooflower ✅ Action of the week = Find out what to do after #nomowmay2024 May will be over soon, but mowing less from April until September is one of the best ways you can help pollinators. If you remove the grass clippings when you do mow, this slowly reduces the fertility of the soil, allowing native wildflowers to grow naturally. There are a couple of pollinator-friendly mowing regimes you could adopt., e.g. a short-flowering meadow (cut once a month) or a long-flowering meadow (cut once a year). Even managing a section or strip of your lawn in this way can make a difference.
