🌸 🪲Last week, we had our event "Certification for Conservation" Here are our top 6 highlights: 🌱Natural ecosystems have declined by 47% on average, relative to their earliest estimated states. Additionally, 72% of indicators developed by Indigenous People and local communities show ongoing deterioration of nature elements important to them. (IPBES, 2019). These data demonstrate the importance of landscape-scale wildlife conservation. 🌿Preserving the land as it is and ensuring sustainable wild harvesting is probably the best long-term conservation tool, and certifications play a key role in this topic. 🦍 Wildlife Friendly Enterprise Network has protected hundreds of threatened species, including the Andean bear and the jaguar. 🍃With 57 certified plant species, FairWild Foundation is the only certification focused solely on sustainable wild harvesting. There are now 1.7 million wild hectares protected under FairWild certification. 🌞 Zahra Osman, Director of neo botanika, stressed the importance of the 4 T's for conservation in the case of frankincense: Training, Traceability, Tree Counts, and Treasured. 🌷Dr. Sally Gouldstone emphasized the importance of third-party certifications for combating greenwashing and as a source of customer trust. Australia is rapidly becoming a national graveyard for the nation’s unique, iconic wildlife. Neither major party nor the Federal Greens have ensured environmental issues are the nation’s top priority policies. At a time when the natural world is under siege, the lack of any substantive action, given the current status of Australian biodiversity with ongoing losses caused by native forest logging, is bordering on criminal. Politicians ignore intergenerational equity and the precautionary principle — otherwise, there would be immediate action in response to the tsunami of threats facing the Australian environment. Federal legislation is a farce, with the forestry industries given a free pass on protecting forest fauna and flora. Australia is scheduled to host the Global Nature Positive Summit in Sydney in October, focused on tackling biodiversity loss. Co-hosted by the NSW Government, given the destruction of the state’s native forests, plus massive urbanisation destroying koala habitats, the event is yet another gigantic hypocrisy.

How do we enable a sustainable wildlife ranching sector that benefits both people and wildlife? Our fascinating dialogues series on the Zimbabwe Wildlife Economy ends with our fifth and final event at 12:00 tomorrow, 14 March, which focuses on enabling a sustainable wildlife ranching sector in Zimbabwe. Wildlife ranching presents the potential for multiple sources of income, accompanied by landscape restoration. As opposed to rearing livestock, wildlife ranching offers the potential for tourism and hunting, alongside the trade in animal products such as meat and hides. It also enhances natural habitats, which in turn can generate additional economic opportunities from the sustainable use of other wild species. Speakers involved in tomorrow's discussion include AWEI's Dr Wiseman Ndlovu, Dr Peter Makumbe, Research Manager at Shangani Ranch, and Mr Kudzai Mpakairi, Research Assistant at the The African Leadership University. Ms Nobuhle Thelma Chikuni, Project Officer at the Zimbabwe Environmental Law Association and ShareScreen Africa's Prudence Nkomo will facilitate the dialogue. Don’t miss this discussion on a critical component in building a robust and sustainable wildlife economy in Zimbabwe. At Summit Materials, we aim to reclaim as we go, allowing us to repurpose as much as possible back into the earth. 🌱 We strive to restore soil, plant life, and wildlife habitats, while also developing comprehensive reclamation policies. Since our partnership with the Wildlife Habitat Council began, our conservation efforts and certified habitat programs have expanded to include thousands of managed acres. From planting pollinator gardens to encouraging avian species, each of our conservation certification programs is composed of unique projects that are driven by the site’s landscape, the team’s objectives, and an understanding of high-value biodiversity areas. Most recently, we achieved Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC) Conservation Certification for our Andrews Quarry. This achievement recognizes the efforts of our company’s continued commitment to environmental stewardship. Check out more about our land reclamation and biodiversity programs, as well as our WHC-certified sites here: https://bit.ly/3NCzrPZ #EnvironmentalResponsibility #Sustainability #EarthMonth #TeamSummit #LandReclamation #Biodiversity

Our survey remains open - seeking information about where in the county improvements could be made for nature to recover - so do take the opportunity to take part and complete it. Improvements could be through action to boost or protect natural habitats and biodiversity or initiatives to nurture and protect native wildlife. When you share your thoughts through the survey, you’ll have the opportunity to drop a virtual pin on an online map to identify potential locations for improvements for nature recovery. If you want to let us know about more than one location or area, feel free to complete the survey again to nominate a different area. Do tell us also if there are improvements to habitats near you that are needed and whether you think there should be a particular focus on a species of plantlife or wildlife. Additionally, we’d like to know if there are spaces where you would like to see new habitats created or joined together. The information we collect through the survey is really important to help us prepare Hampshire’s Local Nature Recovery Strategy, which the Government has asked us to do and has funded. The strategy will also cover the areas of Portsmouth and Southampton and in its development, we’ll also be working with Hampshire’s borough, city, district, parish and town councils, as well as the wildlife and farming organisations, national parks and environmental and conservation organisations. Established in 1990 by Dr. Laurie Marker, the Cheetah Conservation Fund has become a global leader in cheetah conservation. One of their pioneering initiatives, the Livestock Guarding Dog program, deploys specially trained dogs to protect livestock from predators like cheetahs. It reduces conflicts between farmers and wildlife while safeguarding livelihoods and cheetah populations. CCF's impact extends beyond conflict mitigation. They've uncovered crucial insights into cheetah biology, behaviour, and ecology through extensive research efforts. By understanding cheetahs' needs and behaviours, CCF develops targeted conservation strategies to address threats such as habitat loss and poaching, ensuring the survival of this iconic species in Namibia's landscapes. What sets CCF apart is its holistic approach to conservation. They work closely with local communities, providing education and resources to promote coexistence between humans and cheetahs. CCF fosters long-term sustainability and biodiversity conservation by empowering communities to become stewards of their shared environment. Considering this, which other conservation initiatives in Namibia have caught your attention, and how do you think they contribute to wildlife preservation and community engagement? #CheetahConservation #CCF #Namibia #WildlifeProtection #AfricanWanderer #Africa #Wildlife

Experts believe we're already in a sixth mass extinction. 🌍 🔥 As one species becomes extinct, many other species are affected, putting numerous ecosystems in danger of collapsing through a waterfall effect. During the week of #WorldWildlifeDay, we recognise it has never been more important than now to acknowledge communities' essential role in protecting and maintaining our fragile ecosystem. DSWF believes changing attitudes within communities can lead to long-term conservation success and instil positive relationships with future generations. Our team's visit to SE Asia in January enabled them to see firsthand the vital importance of indigenous people and communities in the fight to protect the world's most endangered wildlife, such as tigers, elephants, and pangolins. 🐅 Read our latest blog to learn about the 'faces behind conservation': https://lnkd.in/eaFhnF9v #FightProtectEngage #Conservation #WildlifeConservation #EndangeredSpecies #WeAreAllRangers #WomenInConservation #WildlifeConservation #Thailand #CommunitiesInConservation #LivingWithWildlife #SixthMassExtiction #SaveEndangeredSpecies

𝗪𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗩𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗮 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗮𝗺𝗼𝗺 𝗥𝗘𝗗𝗗 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗮𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝘅𝗵𝗮𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲, 𝟭𝟰-𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵 𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁’𝘀 𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗩𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗮’𝘀 𝗩𝗖𝗦, 𝗖𝗖𝗕𝗦 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗗 𝗩𝗜𝗦𝘁𝗮 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀. 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: Verra’s review re-examined eight years of the project’s work and independent audits, and found no non-conformities to their standards, which reinforces what our due diligence has shown all along: the project delivers exceptional benefits for both conservation and communities in an exceptionally challenging operating environment. The actions for further strengthening SCRP noted in Wildlife Alliance’s reports to Verra reflect continuous improvements that Wildlife Alliance has already implemented or is currently implementing. We stress that these improvements are above and beyond the requirements of Verra’s standards and are built upon recommendations that emerged from the project’s ongoing consultation with communities. SCRP has always complied with VCS, CCBS and SD VISta; the project is now exceeding them. But despite the project’s proven impact and integrity, after more than a year on hold SCRP faces an uncertain future. This puts at risk the survival of the Southern Cardamom rainforest, the survival of the 62 globally threatened species the project protects, and the well-being of 29 local and Indigenous communities who rely on SCRP for funding to provide safe drinking water, improve food security, and for healthcare and education. Most importantly, the project has overwhelming support from these communities; in recent FPIC (Free, Prior and Informed Consent) meetings 93% of community members voted in favour of the project. Therefore, we remain steadfast in our commitment to SCRP and the communities it serves. With the hold now lifted, we will do all we can to support Wildlife Alliance and secure urgently needed investment for the project – to fund community development, protect biodiversity, and reduce global emissions by conserving an irreplaceable forest ecosystem under constant threat. We encourage everyone to read Wildlife Alliance’s statement on today’s news: https://lnkd.in/etpU7G2w

Global biodiversity conservation is crucial for maintaining the balance of ecosystems and ensuring the well-being of all life forms on Earth. Biodiversity supports essential ecosystem services like clean air, water, and soil fertility, upon which humans and wildlife depend. However, human activities such as habitat destruction, pollution, and climate change are causing a rapid loss of biodiversity worldwide. Legislation plays a vital role in protecting habitats and wildlife. Acts like the Room to Roam Act set a precedent for proactive conservation efforts, promoting sustainable development practices that consider the needs of both humans and wildlife. By implementing measures to protect wildlife connectivity and preserve habitats, such legislation helps mitigate the negative impacts of urbanization and development on ecosystems. Effective biodiversity conservation legislation encourages habitat restoration, wildlife corridor creation, and the establishment of protected areas. It also fosters community engagement and environmental stewardship, ensuring that future generations can continue to benefit from the services provided by healthy and diverse ecosystems. Therefore, global efforts to enact legislation like the Room to Roam Act are essential for safeguarding biodiversity and promoting a sustainable future for all.
