A couple of hints for new engineers applying for a position in the power industry. 1. Make SURE your resume and cover letter are free of errors. 2. Do not claim expertise that you do not have. 3. Be sure to include a cover letter customized for the the position you want. Use the job description as a guide. Highlight your relevant skills, express an eagerness to learn the ones you do not have, and demonstrate you've taken the time to research the opportunity. 3. Prepare for your interview. You should be able to write a short Wiki on the industry (segments, major players, trends) and company (operations, customers, products). Refresh your classroom knowledge of the relevant engineering application area (i.e., if its a job in system protection, you should be able to communicate an understanding of Ohm's law). Prepare questions for the interviewer ahead of time. 4. At the interview, slow down. Listen carefully. Communicate with openness and integrity. Feel free to ask for clarification. Pauses for contemplation are acceptable. 5. After the interview, send a thank you. 6. If you are not successful, try not to take it personally. Ask for feedback and revise your approach for your next opportunity.
