#Venezuela: Is re-democratization possible? Under the authority of Hugo Chávez and then Nicolás Maduro since 2013, Venezuela has gradually fallen into an authoritarian regime, plunging the country into a very precarious economic, political and human situation. However, after 25 years of authoritarian rule, Venezuela has never been closer to becoming a democracy again. In a few weeks, more precisely on July 28, everything could change, notably thanks to María Corina Machado, the representative of the opposition to the current regime. But is this hope for change really within reach? It is likely that the Maduro regime will try to retain power in different ways and, even more so, if the opposition regains power, democratic Venezuela will face many challenges! Check the article by Leonardo Vivas to dive into this exciting and challenging issue: https://lnkd.in/eHUCsqN2 #politics #southamerica #democracy #maduro #hugochavez

Maduro's continuity is not guaranteed without terror. And that is what will come in the next few years. Within Venezuela there are three types of reactions in general regardless of ideology: 1) paralyze and adapt to Maduro's rule, they are the most, 2) rebel, they are the least, although more and more in Chavismo and that worries because unlike the opposition, a Chavista does not take hostages or negotiate, they resort to violence without scruples, 3) flee and that is what we see with emigration. https://lnkd.in/ehkdRREC

https://lnkd.in/gubcBrTJ gerretsen, liberal, saying Conservatives are trying to make investigation into foreign interference a partisan issue, just like all the libs lately saying the same thing, everything is now a partisan issue like that's a dangerous thing. Well guess what libs, Canadians are not stupid like you think and are hoping we are. Your totally corrupt government and coalition have placed you right where you have landed without the help of the Conservatives. Conservatives are trying to uncover the depths of your corruption, have each instance investigated, much to your displeasure hoping never to be caught. You are the ones blocking all investigations into your government's corruption and now further delaing the process by refusing to attend 5 meetings throughout the summer as Mr. Cooper has sought to continue. Who is partisan? libs, fergus and all coalition siding with libs. Conservatives are the official opposition to your party, it is their job to do exactly as they are doing, opposing you and exposing you to Canadians. They are doing a great job whereas your government has destroyed Canadians and Canada. All your nonsense talk, thinking you are duping Canadians is thankfully falling for the most part on deaf ears. You have lied, cheated and stolen from Canadians since you came into power, now more Canadians are aware and waking up instead of falsely believing your government is actually working on our behalf. Clearly you are not, Canada is broken and is not being run as a true democratic country as it should be, that's what we voted for, but not what we got.

This is great news for the region, IF the prospects are to - i) reverse the economic crisis that is grappling the boulevarian state, ii) not threaten the stability of Guyana, South America and CARICOM states, iii) remove the blockade on their opposition members from participating in Venezuela’s political culture, iv) allow international law and practices to prevail by signing-on to treaties or re-engage their acceptance of treaties they have signed and ratified and v) acknowledge the eminence of International Organizations - International Court of Justice, Caribbean Court of Justice, International Criminal Court, UN, World Trade Organization, World Maritime Organization and it organizations, et cetera.

"These various tactics are serious and concerted effort to interfere with democratic activity in Canada, and leave millions of Canadians at risk of being intimidated, coerced, silenced, and unable to enjoy the basic democratic rights and freedoms guaranteed in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms in our constitution. These tactics cannot be tolerated in a free and sovereign country." Watch the rest of my opening remarks at the Congressional-Executive Commission on China below.

I was in Venezuela a couple of weeks ago talking to local actors and I can share a few personal impressions about the escalating tensions with Guyana: ▪ The armed conflict seems unlikely to me. The dispute suddenly monopolized state media while I was there. Not coincidently, it followed the impressive opposition-led presidential primaries in late October. Turnout was high even in areas where Maduro's clientelistic and coercive networks are strong. He saw a red flag there. ▪ Maduro's main challenge is avoiding new US sanctions while undermining the opposition's chances to win the 2024 elections. Free elections are Washington's condition not to resume sanctions, which is key for the economy, but Maduro knows the opposition leader María Corina Machado can beat him. ▪ Maduro's aggressive rhetoric towards Guyana seems to be an attempt to halt the opposition's momentum and fuel a nationalistic sentiment to strengthen himself. The economic potential of the Essequibo area is a factor of course, but the main driver is likely his challenging political situation internally. National enemies are convenient. The costs of a real war are not. #politicalrisk #geopoliticalrisk #securityrisks #venezuela #guyana

‘Bukele’s courtship of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) as an alternative to the US, including multiple infrastructure projects, will not do much to put food on the table for Salvadorans if the country’s access to US markets weakens. While the country has expanded sugar exports to the PRC in recent years, its capabilities to grow traditional exports to the PRC market as an alternative are limited, including the China knowledge of its export promotion organization Proesa. A study by the Central American Integration Bank (BCIE) highlights the persistent inability of Central American states to substantially benefit from trade with the PRC, even after establishing diplomatic relations.’ https://lnkd.in/gmzqUats

Canadian politics is under fire as the MEA accused Canadian officials of instigating violence and terrorism. In an extraordinary statement from the MEA, the language used to condemn Canadian officials was described as 'politically-condoned hate crimes and criminal violence.' As a result, the MEA has accused Justin Trudeau, Chrystia Freeland, and Melanie Joly of effectively inciting violence and terrorism. This goes to show that politics is never a single event, but rather a meticulously planned chain of events. #politics #internationalrelations #Canada #INDIA
