TimeOut's Ashley Brozic says: "Between globally recognized chefs like Massimo Bottura opening restaurants here (Torno Subito is coming to Miami this year) and secondary outposts for Latin American restaurant groups, you can get a taste of the entire world in one place. EMBRACING ETERNITY: EXPLORING CONVIVIALITY IN ROMAN ART HISTORY
Post 7/7 by Natalie Hayllar, APD
Conviviality, the celebration of social gatherings and feasts, has been vividly depicted in Italian art for centuries. Banquet scenes and market gatherings adorn frescoes and paintings, offering a glimpse into the social life of ancient Rome and revealing the intricate connections between food and society.
Roman art often portrayed scenes of joyous drinking and dining, reflecting the social status of the subjects and the time they lived in. Depending on the depicted foods and ingredients in the painting indicated whether the setting was noble or humble, and according to Laura Offeddu of Gustolab (personal communication, June 26 2023), provides valuable insights into the timeline and history of ingredients entering Italian cuisine and the culinary identities of the time. Sharing wine is also a recurring theme in Italian art that symbolises the spirit of conviviality that transcended all social classes (Montanari, 2015). According to Capatti (2003), food depicted in Roman art was more than just sustenance; it reflected the Empire's prosperity and the deeper meanings attached to communal dining.
Observations in the Gallerie Nazionali Barberini Corsini, Rome, demonstrate examples of sumptuous wealth, lavish banquets and more humble lively conversations among food vendors at markets. The incredible fresco of the Last Supper by Leonardo Da Vinci, at Cenacola Vinciano Milan, depicts one of the most famous banquet scenes in history. However, the mood may not have been convivial at this banquet, with many conflicting and controversial theories about what this renowned banquet scene represents.
Regardless, art, conviviality, and culinary history are forever captured in the paint of these incredible artworks.
