The other day, David Shames, our sales manager, told me with a laugh, "You give me too much praise, don't forget to shower compliments on Niv too!" David doesn't know Niv and I have known each other for years. When I shared this with Niv Imber, he winked and said, "Yes, you don't have to give me verbal praise. I know when you compliment me for a job well done without it." This anecdote makes me believe I've done something right because: 👉I can trust my team. 👉It's important for the team to ensure everyone gets recognition for their efforts. 👉The newest team member felt comfortable approaching me about recognizing someone else’s work. This, for me, is the essence of the User1st company culture – built on trust, shared recognition, and open communication. #companyculture #team #people

Today marks the 45th birthday of Daycos. Since it is kind of a milestone year, I wanted to share a few thoughts. Forty-five years ago my parents moved from Houston, TX to the Washington DC area to start John Day and Associates, as Daycos was originally known. While it may have had a name that sounded professional, I recall the beginnings to be quite humble: a few tables in the basement of our rental home, and the "Associates" referenced in the name were my mom, my sister, and myself (and I was 6 years old at the time). From those humble beginnings, Daycos has been very successful by the traditional measurements of businesses. We are consistently profitable, debt free, and have had consistent growth over decades in business. However, I don't think those traditional markers of success are what I think is worth noting. To me, the success of Daycos is about more than profits, it is about our people, our customers, and our community. I’ve heard other business owners talk about how hard it is to have employees to take "ownership" in their companies, and we’ve been fortunate that we’ve never had that problem at Daycos. Our employees operate with such a high level of pride and ownership in the company that it humbles me. We are intentional about investing in our employees, and those investments have consistently paid off over the years in Daycos attracting and retaining some of the smartest, most dedicated, and hardworking people I could ever hope to work with. And of course, none of this is possible without the great partnerships we have built with our loyal and supportive customers. We measure customer relationships in decades, not years, because we have always tried to focus on making our customers successful. We’ve probably said "yes" to a lot of requests from customers that we should’ve turned down from a strict dollars and cents point of view, but we have 45 years of evidence to show that our belief in those relationship investments has paid off over the long term for us and for our customers. Finally, I believe Daycos wouldn’t have been as successful without the decision to move to Norfolk, Nebraska, which was my mother's hometown. Being located in this supportive community with such a strong culture of hard work and loyalty has been invaluable. When we give back to our community, it's not just because we charitable, it's because we’re returning some of the profits of this company to the community that helped make them possible. While certainly not without challenges, it has been a great 45 years of business for Daycos. So to every person who has had a role in Daycos over the years, whether you are a current or former employee, a customer, an industry partner, a community member, or a friend, thank you for your contribution to 45 years of success to this unique small business trying to do business in the best way it can.

I imagine I’m like many, diving into 2024 in wonderment for what it has in store. The journey is already starting to take shape even though some goals have already fallen off over here (i.e., a vacation-cruise by January - c’mon, who was I kidding, lol). And sure, there are goals that always make their way into every year's promise, like taking heed of the “KonMari Method” for radical decluttering in my spaces, making its traction at a snail’s pace; or weight loss, better health and work routines; advancement of this and that... At this moment... At this moment, it's a delight to catch this video I took part in back in 2023 (the team, and me at time-stamp 1:04), by the fabulous Bob Fleck, during my first of two terms as a Board member at New Visions Toronto. What a heart and eye-opening, fun experience so far with this amazing, dedicated team. It brought me to the question for this year, which often comes up for me, “Can you actually make a difference in the world?” Well, why not?! It starts with making a conscious choice to explore, then seize opportunities where your valued skill set, kind-hearted contribution can serve in a meaningful way, for a better world, better community, better life for self and others. One such opportunity is serving to support organizations and their people for a meaningful cause - like, New Visions' mission for better community inclusion and quality care/living for those with complex developmental disabilities. Research tells us that there is an estimated 1.3 billion people – about 16% of the global population – who currently experience and live with a disability. And this is increasing due to the aging population and increase of diseases. According to UNICEF with the World Health Organization (2023 Global Report), children and young people with developmental disabilities are a large and growing population. In Canada alone, about 315,000 (or 5.1%) of Canadians aged 15 years are living with a developmental disability or disorder – more than 64,000 with developmental and disability challenges reside in Ontario. Consider New Visions Toronto as a “charity of choice” to add to your brilliance of making a difference. As there is no such thing as a small contribution for making a difference, there are various ways to contribute and help out in this no-small feat: 👉🏽Follow their page to help them grow their presence on social media. 👉🏽Consider donating - e.g., $, time, volunteer, or sponsorship/partnership. 👉🏽Share this post and other posts from the New Visions page to increase awareness. Wow! How has it already been a year?! I’ll tell you what though… that old saying “time flies when you’re having fun” couldn’t be more true.
