I'm terrible about consistency on LinkedIn, but over the last year I've used the platform to start conversations with people in the music industry who I seek to learn from, for which I'm so grateful. I've also been messaged by college students / recent grads who want to know more about what I do, which have led to some fun and meaningful conversations. So this message is two-fold: 1. Do you believe every experience can have a positive impact on your career? tl;dr: I do. Let's back up a bit, though. 👉 I didn't go to school for marketing. My degree is in Broadcasting & Digital Media, complete with my college years spent at the student radio station and an internship in Nashville in artist management. I have a breadth of knowledge on copyright law, survey research, audio and video, and how the music and radio industries work. And when a client wanted a podcast in my first agency job, I set everything up and recorded the episodes. I consider this background my superpower. I learned marketing on the job from my range of positions, and I followed the right people on social media to learn the latest tips. (Not that marketing degrees are wrong by any means! I've simply had a different path.) All this to say, winding career paths are a fun ride (90% of the time 😉 ), and every experience you have plays into your unique value prop as a person. For my first big girl post, I am excited to share that I've completed a Business Development and Sales Externship with Extern! 🚀 Despite managing various commitments in my personal and academic life, mastering time management was vital in fulfilling my assignments. During the externship, I used my research and critical thinking skills to find potential Content Creators for Thematic. The platform offers non-copyrighted music for content creators, and I was on a mission to find potential partnerships that would fuel the company's growth. Then, I had to use my analytical skills and AI resources to find information to create Personas and discover key trends in the creator economy. At the end of the program, I polished my public speaking and presentation skills with a concise 5-minute presentation. 🎤💼 I want to thank Extern for offering these programs to help individuals further their professional careers. I also want to thank Christie Andersen for her support and guidance and my awesome Slack peers for their constant feedback and dedication to helping each other succeed. 🎉 🙌 I hope to be able to participate in future externships soon! 😊 #BusinessDevelopment #Sales #Externship #LearningAndGrowing

INTERVIEW TIPS FROM ME !!

Greetings, LI! I am actively seeking my next role, hoping to secure a position by summer. My target position is a #earlycareerresearchers in the #socialsciences. I am working on a Ph.D. in Education Research, Measurement, and Evaluation at #unccharlotte. At the end of S’24, I will have a #quantitativeanalysis certificate. (I have 4 classes, 2 internships, and 1 dissertation left!) I have training in #quantitativeresearch, #qualitativeresearch, #surveyresearch, and #programevaluation. I am familiar with data screening and cleaning techniques, descriptives and inferential statistics, as well as regression (linear models, hierarchical, structural equation modeling, etc.) I have been on #researchteams examining NC Pre-K substitutes and University Peer Teaching Observation (publication accepted!) I have conducted my own investigations into #genderinequality in band festival performance scores in NC (heirarchical logistic regression) and secondary music teachers teaching a music class for special education that neither NC nor our national governing music body has curriculum for (phenomenological study). Upcoming work includes an internship working closely with a school system on #teacherstress. Another upcoming project is bringing a #datavisualization course into our university unit. I am a #transitioningteacher. I have almost 20 years’ experience as a band and orchestra director—the short version of that story is that I essentially ran a small business (fundraisers, accounts payable, Boosters, hiring coaches) along with long hours working with kids. I have #softskills and #contentknowledge of teaching and music, working with individual students to groups as large as 100 students to produce amazing results. I can work #solo, but I am also a #teamplayer. If we are connected, you’ll know I have been at this for a while now. I really hope another year of research preparation under my belt will help me #getajob this time. :) I’d love to hear of opportunities in NC or SC, or remote (some travel is ok!) As I surf the job boards every day, I notice one thing: “8 years of experience required” in a specific field (mind you most of the jobs have salaries under $60,000) The first “real job” that I ever had was at the Fox School of Business at Temple University, I was the marketing and events coordinator for the centennial celebration. I had planned a few small campus events with my orgs and suddenly I was responsible for producing an event with 30 vendors, a number of student performances, and over 50 volunteers (with oversight, of course). They knew I came in as an intern and ended up with a full-time job within 5 days, they knew I was a student who never planned such a large event, they knew I was taking 5 classes and working a second job at night…and not a single person in that office had any doubt that I could do it (and did). From my perspective, in entertainment/marketing/events…things change every day. New technology is created, new vendors are available, and everyone is looking to do something innovative. Of course extensive years of experience will always be valuable, but you might be missing out on the best candidate. The ones who are actually excited about the job, would go into an interview knowing they’re the target market and have ideas that nobody else is bringing, and bring a new thought process that can make what you do more efficient. So, do you really need someone with 8 years of experience or do you need someone who’s creative, organized, and executes on time? #marketing #events #music #entertainment #hiringpractices #jobsearch
