Alarming figures from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) showing that the trade finance gap has grown to $2.5tn, a 47% increase on two years ago. While there are several factors to explain this rise, the impact will be felt hardest by small and medium-sized businesses who regularly struggle to access trade financing. These figures emphasise the urgency for more effective supply chain solutions, embracing the digitisation of trade. With just under two weeks until the coming into force of the Electronic Trade Documents Act, the UK Government is seeking to make Britain the best place in the world to do business. As the first G7 and G20 country to enact MLETR-type legislation, the UK is leading the way on digital trade, but more needs to be done to turbocharge adoption across the world.
