🌐 Last week Exotrail was proud to join the 67th session of the Committee On Peaceful Use of Outer Space, in Vienna 🇦🇹, on the invitation of the French delegation. 🛰️ Our General Counsel, Cécile Gaubert and our Chief of staff Maxime Jambon made a technical presentation on space sustainability, seen through the lens of a space logistics company. 🙌 Last Friday wrapped up with a side event organized by France, with contributions from Ambassador Delphine Hournau-Pouëzat, Aarti Holla-Maini (Director of United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs), Eutelsat Group, Safran and Exotrail. 🤝 This was an occasion to recall, in front of a worldwide United Nations delegation, the necessity to create bridges with industry. The space industry needs to learn from the “Vienna spirit” and the importance of COPUOS’s work towards a more #peaceful and #sustainable space. Public representatives can also benefit from industry feedback, as well as the insights on effective solutions companies can bring. 🌠 At Exotrail we believe that debris mitigation is key, and that all satellites – big or small – deserve efficient propulsion systems not to become a burden during collision avoidance or at the end of its life. We also believe that all complex services in orbit will require enhanced cooperation in the international space community, for instance, to ensure coordination on missions between satellites from different countries. Let’s tackle these challenges collectively, we are ready to help!

Exotrail is a space logistics company, which became November 11, 2023, a satellite operator with its first #spacevan™ in orbit. The very same date, Exotrail was intervening at the Forum de Paris sur la Paix (Paris Peace Forum), a major event tackling global governance challenges, to state its engagement towards a more sustainable space environment. Because we want to do things the right way, from the beginning. Being part of the problem and part of the solution, here is our full statement regarding the upcoming high-mobility era in space. Main takeaways: - On top of the debris issues, the high mobility era in space will bring new challenges for space surveilance and tracking (SST), and space traffic management (STM). - Exotrail pledges, and encourage other in-orbit services providers, to commit flight plans to the local SST regulators/coordinators. - We are looking forward to tackling these challenges right now, and discussing this topic with all relevant public and private stakeholders.

It was very rewarding to participate in the conference on the Management and Sustainability of Space Activities organized by the Portuguese Space Agency and the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) on May 14 and 15 in Lisbon. Two preparatory symposiums preceded the Lisbon Conference in November 2023 and March 2024, respectively. These technical and governance discussions involved over 80 specialists from 24 countries and led to the presentation of the 'Lisbon Declaration for Outer Space' on the second day of the conference. The Declaration identified six key points that will contribute to a sustainable future for space. As the conference concluded, we looked ahead to the Summit of the Future, where member states committed to creating a pact for a sustainable and safe future. The exponential growth of objects in orbit indicates both opportunities and challenges, such as the risk of satellite collisions with space debris and conflicts in resource exploration. Therefore, reaching the Summit of the Future will be crucial to the realization of more peace, security, and sustainability, especially with new technologies on the horizon. I also take this opportunity to congratulate the @Portuguese Space Agency, notably Ricardo Conde, Hugo André Costa Carolina Rêgo Costa, for organizing such an impactful conference in Lisbon. The dialogue in Lisbon will certainly impact the path forward! After a thought-provoking day at Luxembourg Space Agency's NewSpace Europe conference last week, the discussions on #SpaceSustainability, particularly Dr. Moriba Jah's keynote, left a lasting impression. And it made me wonder: Who among you has heard of the #KesslerSyndrome? Allow me to shed some light on this: The Kessler Syndrome is a wake-up call for Space Sustainability ⏰. First predicted by Kessler and Cour-Palais back in 1978, the Kessler Syndrome warns us about the terrifying #dominoeffect that could occur in Earth's orbit. 💡 Imagine this: a single Anti-Satellite (#ASAT) test or a chance space collision sets off a cascade of #spacedebris, like a chain reaction, potentially rendering parts of space unusable. As our reliance on satellites continues to grow, so does the density of these objects surrounding our planet. This increasing density raises the risk of further collisions. The debris generated from these collisions can lead to a perilous domino effect, creating a debris belt encircling the Earth. 👉 And that's the Kessler Syndrome in action. So how do we address this critical issue? ✅ Mitigation strategies like Transparency and Confidence Building Measures (#TCBM) are on the table. ✅ In 2022, European Space Agency - ESA Member States mandated a "Zero Debris approach" for ESA missions, urging global partners to follow suit in addressing space debris. ✅ The #ZeroDebrisCharter is a pioneering global initiative by ESA, uniting diverse space actors with the common goal of creating no more debris by 2030 and ensuring the long-term sustainability (#LTS) of space activities. The Kessler Syndrome reminds us of the importance of responsible space exploration and the need for international cooperation to safeguard our precious orbital environment. While the mentioned initiatives mark crucial steps forward, the road ahead is significant. With thousands of satellites slated for deployment in the upcoming years, the task of ensuring a sustainable and debris-free space environment demands ongoing commitment and collaborative efforts. Let's tackle the upcoming challenges with determination, collective responsibility, and a commitment to safeguard Space Sustainability for our #future. Emphasizing the vital role of international #collaboration, we can only achieve this goal together. #satellites #KesslerSyndrome #ASATtest #spacecollision #sustainability

ILA 2024, Day 2: Highlight was our signature on the "Zero Debris Charter". More than 40 companies and associations committed today for sustainable space operations 👍. This event attracted the highest number of visitors in the Space Pavillion. Also passive deorbit-technology has been mentioned by ESA, such as "drag augmentation devices". One year of work is behind us, 100s of years keeping EARTH's orbit free from debris in front of us. THX to ESA DG Josef Aschbacher (see picture top right) to be insistive to create a Charter independent from EU. THX to Rolf Densing (ESA Director Operations & Space Safety) for giving this ZDC process such high priority. THX to Holger Krag (ESA Space Safety) for effectively acting in the background. THX to Quentin Verspieren (see picture top left) for excellently coordinating and organising the path until now. Our contribution to ZDC: TRL9 ADEO Deorbit Sail. European Space Summit: the Barber of Séville, Reloaded 💡 Europe's approach to space transportation is a blend of political solutions and traditional workforce protection. 🌐 With the recent subsidies for Ariane 6 and Vega-C, it's clear that Europe prioritizes supporting its legacy industrial base. 🏭 However, it raises questions about how this affects investment in European alternative launchers and the perception of Europe in the capital markets. 📊 What are your thoughts? Here’s our Christophe Bosquillon analysis son the recent European Space Summit in Seville, and why Europe seems to be trailing behind.
