COGEN Europe welcomes today’s adoption of the revised Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (#EPBD) by the Council of the European Union. The new Directive provides a legal framework for EU Member States to work towards the objective of #netzero emissions from both new and existing buildings.
"Cogeneration has a vital role to play in helping Europe to use energy more efficiently and reduce CO2 emissions whilst also meeting the needs of households and businesses by providing them with affordable heat and power – where and when they are needed," says Hans Korteweg, Managing Director of COGEN Europe.
"We see great potential for increasing the uptake of renewable energy sources for existing and future buildings, including zero-emission buildings, by utilising #cogeneration technologies either on site or in the context of district heating and cooling networks."
"COGEN Europe will continue to advocate for a smart approach that puts buildings at the centre of integrated energy systems, fostering resiliency, flexibility and affordability for households and businesses."
The final text of the EPBD will be published in the Official Journal of the EU, and the 27 Member states will have two years to incorporate the provisions of the directive into their legislation at national level.
Furthermore, the European Commission will review the directive by 2028, taking into account the experience gained and progress achieved during its implementation by Member States.
