Employment hubs are going from strength to strength across the county, with Exeter’s hub at the city’s Central Library offering valuable employment and careers advice, training and volunteer opportunities. Now Devon County Council is set to expand its network of Youth and Adult Employment Hubs across the county to support people into employment and training. Working in partnership with the City Council, as well as three other district councils (East Devon, Mid Devon and North Devon), the County Council has hubs in across the county. Now, two more Hubs are set to open in Ilfracombe and Tiverton.

We recently held an event at the #Pierhead, to share our analysis and recommendations from our new research on employment support policy in #Wales. 🔎 Our research examines the future of #employment support #policy in #Wales and identifies areas where the existing system can be improved to better assist people to find good quality work, particularly those facing barriers involving poor #health and #disability. 📉 146,000 people or 7.7% of the working-age population are economically inactive due to long-term health conditions or disabilities in Wales, compared with 5.5% in England and 6.9% in Scotland. If Wales matched the UK employment rate, around 28,000 extra people would be in work. Employment support has a vital role to play in addressing job insecurity and in-work #poverty and making Wales a #fairwork nation. We are calling for a shared strategy to tackle #economic inactivity. To address these issues in Wales, there needs to be a much closer partnership between the #UK and Welsh Government. Joshua Miles, Director for Wales and co-author of the report said: 🗨 “Wales has higher rates of economic inactivity and fewer people employed in the labour market. This is despite 75,000 economically inactive people in Wales wanting to work. This calls for a targeted and considered policy response from its elected representatives. However, the current support landscape is at best muddled with strategies from Welsh, UK and local government that too often compete rather than complement each other. International comparators such as the USA, Canada, Germany and the Netherlands show that we can get this right with policies that reflect local communities and drive better outcomes for all concerned. Get Set for another contract win. We are excited to announce that we’ve been awarded a contract to deliver an Individual Placement and Support in Primary Care (IPSPC) programme for Surrey County Council, as part of the Work Wise scheme. Our large team of Employment Specialists will be providing services to almost 1,000 individuals across Surrey’s top 5 “Key Neighbourhoods”, 📍 including Hooley, Merstham & Netherne, Canalside, Westborough, Stoke and Stanwell North. Additionally, our services will also support residents accessing community health services and ethnically diverse people, including those who speak English as a second language. This IPSPC programme provides employment support to adults with long-term conditions or disabilities to help them access and maintain work. This supports Surrey County Council’s system-wide objectives to ‘grow a sustainable economy from which everyone can benefit’, ensure no one is left behind, and everyone is able to fulfil their potential. It recognises employment as a social determinant of health and wellbeing that will support improvements in health inequalities. Through this scheme, Get Set UK's services will enable individuals access to employment, in many cases quickly, building on their strengths and skills, enabling them to realise their potential for recovery. Our Employment Specialists will work alongside a network of existing health and care teams and local employers to support those who want to work.
