𝓑𝓵𝓪𝓬𝓴 𝓗𝓲𝓼𝓽𝓸𝓻𝔂 𝓜𝓸𝓷𝓽𝓱 𝓣𝓱𝓾, 𝓕𝓮𝓫 1, 2024 – 𝓕𝓻𝓲, 𝓜𝓪𝓻 1, 2024 Throughout Black History Month and beyond, it's crucial to grasp the impact of systemic racism on mental health and advocate for well-being within Black communities. Explore resources that highlight ways to support Black mental health, available not only this month but year-round. In the United States, data reveals that mental health conditions affect both Black and White communities equally. However, unique risks to the well-being of People of Color (POC) arise from trauma, violence, and racism. These challenges are exacerbated by disparities in healthcare access, with only one in three Black teens receiving the needed mental health treatment, and Black individuals being 1.5 times more likely to be uninsured than their White counterparts. APNEWS Source https://lnkd.in/eB-DxF7S For young Black individuals seeking mental health support, Centered Health is ready to assist. Our Intensive In Patient & Outpatient Program at Centered Health offers BIPOC-specific cohorts, ensuring that Black clients receive personalized attention in treatment, fostering lasting healing. The program incorporates peer groups, individual therapy, and family therapy, all facilitated by culturally competent clinicians. If you wish to refer a patient directly to Centered Health, please contact us through our website to discuss in detail. #blackhistorymonth #blackexcellence #mentalhealth Hillcrest Adolescent Treatment Center Beachside Teen Treatment Center https://hillcrestatc.com/

Happy #FeatureFriday ! With #BIPOCMentalHealthAwareness month in mind, SCC would like to highlight the important work of the ACLU of MI! The ACLU supports BIPOC mental health by fighting systemic racism and discrimination, advocating for equitable policies, and challenging unjust practices like police brutality and mass incarceration. Their work helps create safer, more supportive environments, which are crucial for the mental well-being of BIPOC individuals. Take a look at what the Michigan chapter of the ACLU has been working on recently: aclumich.org What are some other organizations in your area doing work to support BIPOC mental health and wellness? Start With Hope An exciting new campaign — created by the Ad Council, the CDC, the National Council for Mental Wellbeing, and Shatterproof — encourages people to start their recovery journeys. There is not a “one size fits all” approach. Addiction can affect people of any race, gender, income level, or social class. But because of societal inequities and biases, Black and Hispanic/Latinx people often have less access to treatment services and support. Together, we've created a national, culturally informed campaign to reach these groups with the resources and supports they need to start their journeys to recovery. https://lnkd.in/gW_D_WQM #startwithhope #sobriety #recovery #addiction #harmreduction

📣 The Insanity in Our Juvenile Justice System 🧠 It's time we shed light on a critical issue in our society - the treatment of mentally ill youth within the juvenile justice system. 🕊️ 🤯 It's alarming to see how often we're failing our most vulnerable, those who need support and understanding the most. Our current system often criminalizes rather than rehabilitates, leaving young minds in a downward spiral. 🔍 It's crucial to advocate for reforms that prioritize mental health, provide therapeutic interventions, and create opportunities for these young individuals to rebuild their lives. Every young person deserves a chance at a brighter future. 💪 Let's work together to bring sanity to our juvenile justice system. 💙 #JuvenileJustice #MentalHealthMatters #ReformNeeded

As we continue our spotlight on our mental health and learning disabilities service, we’d like to introduce you to Coleen Edgar, Aaron Davies and Richard Gomera who work as part of the forensic acute team at Royal Cornhill Hospital. It’s a small, secure unit dedicated to supporting men who are in prison or are being supported in other ways by the criminal justice system. Senior health care support worker, Aaron, who used to work in a prison, enjoys seeing the progress patients can make by being supported in addressing mental health issues and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. He explains: “Here, you have a better aspect and see the patients get physically better. We get to know the patients, we are here to boost them and bring the better person out of them. Everybody is an individual and we have a caring role.” Coleen adds: “Because of the nature of the job that we do, team spirit and team support is imperative and for me that’s what makes my job enjoyable. Every patient’s journey is different and it depends on lots of factors. Quite often with the client group we support, unfortunately they’ve had really troubled pasts that have led to them leading the lives that they’ve had, and with that can come some interesting stories.” #MentalHealth #PeopleStories #TeamWork #ProudToBeNHSG

Client Testimonial "[Phoenix Rising] is the best recovery center I've ever been to. I was broken, hopeless, lost and addicted. The services here could help anyone and their team is all-inspiring and genuine. They helped me see what I couldn't see in myself and taught me how to change my unhelpful thinking patterns along with coping skills and emotional intelligence. They also make sobriety fun by a ton of outings, and they will help with transportation to appointments. Shout out to Misty, Dalton, Deonte, Minnie, Genevieve, Ashley and Paul! Good people work here. Thanks for all your help." ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ We offer multiple levels of care to not only help each person begin their recovery from substance-use disorder but also to help them reintegrate back into daily life while learning the skills to stay fully sober long-term. I didn't have a chance to post about the really cool experience Quilan Dutton and I had about a week or so ago at Pizza Cappo. We were sitting next to a couple and I noticed their kiddo was full of energy so I got out a sensory kit and showed the parents and kiddo. These kits are for adults and kids alike, but kids are particularly drawn to them. Anyway, I was telling them about the kits while showing their kiddo how the toys can help us feel safe when Mom and Dad aren't available (kids expect parents to always be available, I know). How it can feel like a hug or when our parents make us feel safe. I have no idea how to interact with kids btw unless I am talking about sensory kits and then I am all of a sudden the coolest adult ever. (This random adult wants me to play with toys... I do want that yes.) The family ended up paying for our dinner and thanking us for what we are trying to do for the world. That right there is why we started our business. We want to make a difference and be the change we wish to see in the world. However, I want adults to play with toys too so do your research and find out if sensory kits, toys, or even the grounding technique might work for you. Anger is an emotion we express but it's usually a defense emotion hiding depression, grief, etc. If you are living with any form of PTSD for any reason these kits can be a life saver when out in the community. Even just a tangle or a squish ball can keep you calm and potentially keep you from flipping your lid. We want to help- Neuro Things www.neuro-things.com

A recent study conducted by Rutgers University School of Public Health has shed light on the psychological and physical tolls faced by Black men who survive gun violence. Survivors often go from being self-reliant to dependent, profoundly affecting their sense of self and identity. This drastic change, as the research points out, can lead to feeling like a burden on their caregivers, thus challenging their traditional roles as protectors and providers. Further, survivors struggle with their newfound limitations to perform everyday activities and battle mental health disorders. Moreover, societal perceptions and self-defined responsibilities around masculinity exacerbate their distress. Gun violence has emerged as a leading cause of death among Black males, with a notable increase in non-fatal injuries leading to disability. The aftermath not only threatens their physical health but also their mental well-being, thus making it a crucial public health concern.
