A few months ago a pair of articles on the sources of BPA in German watershed were pre-published and made available online in IEAM. Along with my coauthors (Lars Tappert, Kyle Fetters, Michael Bunge, Sven Gestermann, Dr., Benedikt Fischer, and many others) I am pleased to report that not only do the articles appear in the latest issue of IEAM (https://lnkd.in/g4J8E2NA) but they are also open access. These article demonstrate the power of a careful study of the usage, disposal, and leachability of consumer chemicals combined with fugacity modeling in characterizing the most important sources and processes in the understanding of the linkages between the usage of consumer chemicals and their concentrations in surface water. Whatever your thoughts are regarding appropriate remediation standards for #PFAS in soil and groundwater, the NICOLE paper certainly contains some sobering data on background concentrations of PFAS present in the environment. Typical values of 10ng/l (ppt) in surface water and 30ng/l in groundwater samples for various PFAS compunds compares to drinking water standards of 4ng/l for the individual PFAS compunds PFOS and PFOA recently introduced by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and 100ng/l for 20 PFAS compounds under the EU Drinking Water Directive (2021). Even rainwater was found to have a typical content of 1-2ng/l, and, as further proof of the extent to which PFAS compounds are ubiquitous in the food chain, total PFAS concentrations of around 20,000ng/l (i.e. 5,000 times more than the US EPA dinking water standard) were found in blood serum. The cited study was undertaken in the Netherlands, but the situation is no doubt comparable to many other countries. Food for thought….

NICOLE’s PFAS Working Group has drafted this Discussion Paper based on its scientific knowledge and long-term experience in risk-based and sustainable industrial land management, highlighting issues in managing PFAS contamination in soil and water. You are free to download and consider the points raised in this Discussion Paper in your own discussions. This week I have been in Brussels for the joint workshop between NICOLE and #commonforum. (NICOLE is a network on industrially co-ordinated sustainable land management in Europe between industry, academia and service providers). The topic for this spring workshop was "The future management of soil contamination. Impacts of European developments regarding soil health and the challenges of emerging contaminants". Tuesday was the member day, where I would highlight the meetings in the regulatory working group and the PFAS working group. The draft of the European soil monitoring law was discussed, especially focused on the uncertainties on how to define a "healthy" soil; the traditional risk-based contaminated land management will certainly challenge future solutions. Also it can be highlighted that there are discrepancies between legal contexts regarding PFAS in Europe. On Wednesday the workshop program had some very interesting presentations by keynote speakers followed by several very interesting break-out sessions.
