My relationship with community recovery goes back to my earliest days…  I was two-years-old when Cyclone Tracy hit Darwin. Our parents sheltered us in the bath with a mattress over our heads. The next day we went looking for my mother's eternity ring, her Christmas gift from my dad. Amazingly, we found it amongst the rubble that was once our house.  It was Australia's most deadly cyclone. Our father stayed to rebuild the town while we moved to Toowoomba where my extended family lived. The thing is, as bad as that event was, it wasn't the worst thing that happened to us.  We were lucky we survived. My dad was a carpenter raised in the bush with the skills to rebuild. We had a significant extended family and a community that supported us. We were able to survive and thrive.   It remains a powerful experience for our family that grounds me. Today as I work as a practitioner as CEO for Australian Business Volunteers (ABV), it's so important to me that no one gets left behind.  Catastrophic events don't have to be catastrophic for everyone.  Communities can be prepared for the event, for both the immediate response and the recovery. These are approaches we need to deploy even more in response to Climate Change.  In the 21st century that cohesion and belonging can be lacking. Back then, I had a huge extended family. We went to church and we all knew each other. Everybody knew if there was something wrong in a family, a death or a challenge. We all kinda mucked in.  But now there's greater mobility, greater loneliness. We have to be more intentional in the ways we build community. SATURDAY MORNING (APRIL 20TH) at 10:30 AM our amazing Who I Am Foundation volunteers in #Albuquerque will be having our next Community Clean-Up (ABQ)! For this Community Clean-Up our volunteers will meet up at, and clean the neighborhood around Mesa Verde Community Center located at 7900 Marquette NE Albuquerque NM 87108 NO OPEN-TOED SHOES Cleaning up loose trash is one of the best ways to pitch in for your community and the environment. Volunteering as a means to help conserve and protect the environment has a lot of upsides. Of course, the first is that you’ll be taking care of our planet, and it badly needs a little love given the myriad ways in which we’ve become adept at destroying it. But beyond that, volunteering for a cause you care about is a great way to meet like-minded people, make friends, and pull yourself out of the blues that sometimes accompany caring a lot about something important – especially if you feel alone in your endeavors. None of us like the sight of litter. Litter spoils the look of where we live but that’s not the only reason for picking up litter. There are a number of benefits from picking up litter that you may not have considered before. Volunteer-led projects such as these are one of the quickest, simplest, and least expensive ways to inspire more community spirit and civic action. A visually appealing community increases property values, attracts businesses, and improves the neighborhood's image. Beauty is one of the three most influential factors in community attachment, which means loyalty, to your particular town or city. Shooting less content = Better Storytelling? This may seem crazy but as I’ve grown in visual storytelling one of the key things I’ve recently been doing is shooting less content. When I was first starting out I was always worried about missing something and would constantly be shooting. This led to editing being a nightmare. Now that I have more experience I understand the general flow of events and can be more focused on the quality of shots and how they contribute to the story instead of just shooting out of fear of missing something. It may sound counterintuitive but as I’ve been shooting less the quality of my work has gone up and I am far more efficient. #Video #Story #VisualStorytelling #Event #EventPlanning #VideoEditing

Tonight is a big night for the Dubbo Community. Last year I was approached by a local businessman, Steven Wilson (pictured). Steve came to me with an idea. He wanted to do something that contributed positively, and supported vulnerable people in our community to access opportunities. He developed this concept across 110 acres of land he owns and wanted to invite the community to use the land. Fast-forward to tonight and we're holding our first public meeting to formally invite the community to share their needs and ideas. As anyone in the community development and grants space know, when there's a huge need in the community that's 'hidden' because organisations aren't able to advocate or co-ordinate themselves for advocacy they often just put up with the status quo. The flow-on effect is that they're restricting services to the community, other services go out of town, people travel out of town for recreation purposes that should be available and it reduces a communities liveability. Then we have social issues, which in part, are symptoms of this (lack of services, opportunities etc.). Our team is honoured to lead this project.
