Last week, we were honored to host Kellee Stewart, Progyny, Inc. and RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association to kickoff National Infertility Awareness Week (April 21 – 27) with a panel discussing the importance of education, support, and access to family building care. We're honored to have played a small role in this event and to be a part of a more inclusive movement to expand the ways people celebrate their parenthood journey.

Here at York Paediatrics, we believe fostering independence builds confidence and sets the stage for future success! 🌟 Help your child become independent by breaking down chores into smaller, achievable steps. Offering choices like picking their outfit or a healthy snack gives them a sense of control and helps them develop decision-making skills. Also, visual cues are powerful tools for independent learning! Create charts or use pictures to represent the steps in a routine, making it easier for your child to follow along on their own. Most importantly, acknowledge and cheer for even small accomplishments when they complete a task independently. Positive reinforcement goes a long way in building their confidence and fostering a love for independence. 💙 Ready to unlock their potential for independence? What Does The Oldest Person With Down Syndrome Have To Teach Us? Until a couple of days ago I did not know that Down syndrome is older than the earliest Homo Sapiens. A recent article in the journal Science Advances reports that a Neanderthal child, who lived over 150,000 years ago, has recently been diagnosed as having had Down syndrome. An analysis of the structure of the ear revealed patterns only found in people with Down syndrome. Scientists also surmise that the pathology of the ears would have made the child deaf and created severe problems with balance. The fact that this child lived roughly six years suggests that he or she received an extraordinary amount of care that would have had to included not just parents but extended family and other members of the community. Earlier evidence had showed that Neanderthals took care of their companions who became ill or were injured, but scientists have argued about whether that practice arose from a sense that the patient would be expected to pay the group back if they recovered or if it demonstrated true compassion. The discovery of this child, whom the scientists have named "Tina," is evidence that Neanderthals were indeed compassionate. Then, as now, it is the presence of someone with a disability that can show us who we really are. How we care for mothers and children has always spoken volumes about who we are, individually and as a people. Many of the best people I've met in my lifetime are folks who work with children: doctors, nurses, therapists and teachers. They are not in it for the money, but because they seem to be cut from a different cloth. As a society--especially here in Texas--we should be doing a better job of providing the support to help these fine folks do more good work. We would do well to remember that compassion is one of humanity's oldest traditions. I hope you enjoy this remarkable story and share it with people you love.

June is Scoliosis Awareness Month in the USA, a crucial time to shed light on this condition that affects many children and adolescents. As a Product Manager in the HNS Department, I want to emphasize the importance of regular spine screenings for early detection and treatment. Scoliosis, a curvature of the spine, can progress rapidly during growth spurts. Early screening is vital to identify and manage this condition effectively, ensuring better outcomes and quality of life for affected children. Let's work together to raise awareness and support initiatives that promote spine health and early intervention. Every child's health and well-being matter, and through awareness and proactive measures, we can make a significant impact. #ScoliosisAwarenessMonth #ChildHealth #SpineScreening #EarlyDetection

Once individual family members are prepared, it’s time for a family session. These sessions are structured and focused, typically lasting 2-3 hours. We set ground rules to ensure everyone feels heard and respected: No interrupting—everyone gets a chance to speak. Take notes to remember what you want to say. No judgment—everyone’s perspective matters. It’s OK to agree to disagree. Family therapy isn’t just about resolving conflict; it’s also about affirming and validating the ones we love.
