“ Call-sign confusion “ (First Part) The use of similar call signs by aircraft operating in the same area and on the same radio frequency has potential to flight safety incidents, also known as "call-sign conflicts" or "call-sign confusion". The danger of an aircraft taking and acting on a clearance intended for another aircraft due to call sign confusion is a common occurrence. Most airline call signs belong to type (c) for which there is no abbreviation. An aircraft is not permitted to change its call sign during flight, except temporarily on the instruction of an air traffic control unit in the interests of safety. ⚠️ Safety Notice: Geo-Awareness for Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) The UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has issued Safety Notice SN–2023/005 to address issues with RPAS manufacturers' geo-fencing/awareness, impacting airspace safety. Inaccurate airspace information has led to airspace infringements, posing potential risks. It is a legal requirement that UAS Operators update geo-awareness systems with accurate airspace info. Non-compliance is a criminal offense. Key actions: 1. Don't rely solely on manufacturers' geo-awareness. 2. Stay informed about airspace restrictions for your intended flight areas. 3. Regularly refer to Aeronautical Information Publication updates for accurate information. 4. Monitor manufacturers' communications about geo-awareness updates and operator requirements. The Federal Aviation Administration has published InFO 23009 to remind ALL PART 135 of the “...requirements and authorizations necessary to use airport aeronautical data, including runway obstacle analysis products.” Notice 8900.664 tells POIs that approval to use a contracted Runway Analysis product is issued through Ops Spec A009 – and to approve that, the POI needs to review the operators training program and General Operating Manual (GOM) to make sure it is adequately addressed. Advanced Aircrew Academy has reviewed hundreds of customers manuals so we know that many don’t adequately address the topic right now. The good news is we can customize your training in our modules based on your approved/accepted system (which other eLearning providers don't), so that makes our portion of the required training easy to get approved. Inadvertent IMC (Instrument Meteorological Conditions) remains a significant cause of helicopter accidents globally. IMC limits human performance due to reduced spatial orientation and restricts nearly all avenues for information processing. Despite a well-trained human being the most effective safety device in any machine, most aviation accidents are statistically attributed to human error. According to US NTSB statistics, helicopter pilots flying VFR (Visual Flight Rules) into IMC conditions have only a 14% chance of surviving the event. In its 2020 safety report, EASA highlighted that Aircraft Upset scored the highest risk in helicopter operations. An 'upset' is defined as an in-flight condition that unintentionally exceeds the parameters typically experienced in regular operations or training. This is characterized by at least one of the following: - a pitch attitude greater than 25 degrees nose up - a pitch attitude greater than 10 degrees nose down - a bank angle greater than 45 degrees, - Flying at airspeeds is inappropriate for the conditions, even within these parameters. IIMC is an optimal scenario for impairing flight-crew decision-making, which can only be mitigated through proper training to avoid such situations at all costs. #AviationSafety #HelicopterSafety #IMC #FlightSafety #AviationTraining #HelicopterOperations
