Beyond the Hype: Is There Value in Questioning the Popular Narrative? "Don't be afraid to be a contrarian" was advice I was given from one of my early mentors, Peter Kiener, that to this day I try to follow. It isn't always easy to do as narratives have a way of gaining momentum and traction. Take for example the "Global to Local" phenomenon that swept through the #pharma industry starting in mid 2010's impacting #contentcreation and #mlr. Global-to-Local is so hard to execute given how unique and complex each individual market is - not to mention how different labeling is from one region to another. After years of pursuit and massive infrastructure investment (teams, process, and systems), I've yet to see reliable data that suggests that a Global to Local content supply chain results in cost savings, increased content re-use, and decreased time to market. I've been a contrarian on global-to-local for years even while helping teams work through strategy and execution and set reasonable objectives, so it was incredibly refreshing yesterday to hear Anna Malivska talk about the importance of localization of content and that the 'majority of content is created at the local level'. I'd love to see more teams embrace this mindset as doing so may unlock the ability to realize benefits such as: increased content replication at local level and decreased time to market. It was a great presentation with some key insights on lessons learned by the Viseven team.
