Professor at School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (SEECS), National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST)
Our recent work in Wireless Body Area Networks (WBANs) has been accepted for publication in IEEE Open Journal of the Communications Society. My PhD Student Mariya Hanif has carried out this work in collaboration with Waqas Ahmed, Micheal Drieberg and Muhammad Mahtab Alam. This work discusses that placement of the sink node is one of the critical aspects in the design of WABNs as it affects both energy efficiency and connectivity. This paper introduces a hybrid method called Distance and Angulation based AGglomerative Clustering (DAAG). The paper is available at

12th International workshop on FIBER OPTICS in ACCESS NETWORKs - FOAN FOAN is becoming a must-attend event in the world of fibre optic technology, catering to both private and bussines end customers. Following successful conferences in ten different European locations and one in Asia, this year's FOAN will be hosted in Athens, a city rich in history, where you will meet many wonderful people and optical fibre experts. The FOAN workshop series has always featured a mix of young academics and experienced professors; as well as daring engineers and Telekom executives. FOAN also brings together real-world experience and visionaries. However, the major attraction of the FOAN conference series is two days of enyoing of fibre optics in a relaxed environment. This is also the case this year; Papers can be submitted in two forms, but in both cases papers must be original, not previously published and with clear novelty. - - - A peer review process (at least three reviewers) will be conducted on papers before they are submitted to IEEE xplore. - - - One-page papers for early research findings and real-world information. Papers can be submitte at: https://lnkd.in/e9fNFu_6. Deadline: June 10 - will be extended based on interest. Date of conferecne October 29 and 30;

CurrENT welcomes the conclusions of the recent Copenhagen Infrastructure forum, particularly: 🤝 The recognition of the work carried out by ACER and CEER surrounding regulatory investments and the promotion of “innovative, efficiency enhancing grid technologies through tariff design and methodology” and tasking ACER to further support NRAs in implementing these innovative regulatory approaches 📖 The forum calling for an agreed EU catalogue of output (supported by input) indicators for smart grids at all voltage levels to be fully developed and present it to the next Forum meeting. 💶 The forum calling for an uptake of anticipatory investments and of network efficiency technologies "Technologies that can rapidly increase the capacity of the existing grid are here, they are available, they can be deployed in a matter of months" said Mark Norton, Vice-Chair of CurrENT. You can read the all the conclusions in the following link: https://lnkd.in/efXdR6jz

Congratulations to Kenneth Deprez for winning the ISES 2024 ISES Europe Chapter Poster Competition! 🥇 In this poster, Kenneth discusses the design of a novel sensor that can measure 50 Hz magnetic fields. The sensor is needed to accurately quantify the long-term magnetic exposure in the vicinity of high voltage power lines. The sensor can measure both low fields, around 0.4 uT, for which a possible statistical relationship to long-term exposure and health effects is found and, high fields, 100 uT and 200 uT, which correspond to reference levels set by EU and the scientific community. Such a sensor was tested for about 4 months, in which it had a high uptime of 96% and a typical deviation of less then 5% with regard to the baseline. Title: "Watch The Power! Monitoring Fields From High voltage Power Lines" Authors: Kenneth Deprez, Tom Van de Steene, Leen Verloock, Emmeric Tanghe, Liesbeth Gommé, mart verlaek, Michel Goethals, Karen Van Campenhout, David Plets, Wout Joseph

I'm excited to share that our paper entitled "Wavenumber-Domain Precoding for Sum-Rate Maximization in HMIMO Cellular Systems" has been published in the esteemed GLOBECOM 2023 conference that took place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Abstract: Holographic MIMO (HMIMO) is a promising technology for next-generation cellular systems, wherein many antennas are arranged in a compact space at sub-wavelength spacing. We optimize the transmit precoding matrices in the downlink of an HMIMO cellular system using a channel model compliant with electromagnetic wave propagation. Exploiting the structure of the HMIMO channel matrix, we reformulate the sum-rate maximization problem in the wavenumber domain, and is solved using the weighted minimum mean squared error (WMMSE) algorithm. The proposed algorithm achieved the same sum-rate as directly applying the WMMSE algorithm but at much lower computational complexity. A statistical channel state information-based precoding algorithm is also developed. It performed poorly in isotropic scattering environments but achieved sum-rates comparable to the WMMSE algorithm in non-isotropic scattering environments. The sum-rates of all the algorithms increased as antenna spacing decreased for a fixed antenna array form factor, which demonstrates the potential of HMIMO.
