We provide engineering, procurement, and construction project management solutions in the oil and gas, utilities, renewables, energy, and commercial construction industries!
In construction, costs matter. But, I met one engineer who spent dollars to save pennies. An oil and gas company tasked me to optimize a project checking the integrity of our underground pipelines This project required us to shutdown a pipeline for days. Each day a pipeline is out of service costs $100K . My manager told me to find a way to save costs. Perfect! I love solving puzzles with big price tags. When I showed up, I met another engineer already working to find a way to reduce this big spend. His big idea? Using less sand in the sandblasting. Each of these pipes needed to be inspected. So, we sandblasted off the pain to check for cracks. Yes…he’d found a way to save costs. He could save ~$1000 on a $700K project. Like many engineers, he fell in love with one problem, but lost sight of the big picture. I took a different approach. I looked at our processes. I looked for ways to ensure our critical path was clear. I found ways to synchronize our experts and contractors. Instead of a .14% savings, I saved 58% on costs. AND 56% on time. 🔗 Systems of Systems: These are the sort of savings I aim to create for my professional services clients now. I look for ways to engineer the systems. When they hire us to manage a portfolio of vendors and contractors, we can find system-wide savings. And, I don’t worry too much about saving a few grains of sand when I can be saving buckets of cash instead. Have you ever worked with someone who focused on the wrong things?

Highway engineers with construction experience are often hesitant to transition into supervision roles. This may be due to the increased competition and restrictions of Infra-con. Remuneration and benefit in comparison also make it less lucrative in view of Construction site engineers . #engineering #construction #supervision
