💡 Cleantech for Europe Scaleup Coalition Joins Innovation Fund Conference on Driving Sustainable Innovation 💡 Packed day at CINEA - European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency's #IFCleantech conference, with speeches from European Commission EVP Maroš Šefčovič, EU Environment and Climate Director General Kurt Vandenberghe, and the leaders of cleantech scale-ups from across Europe. The need to scale up cleantech emerged as key to Europe’s economic competitiveness, energy resilience and security. In a keynote address on the topic of deployment and scaling up cleantech manufacturing, Vaitea Cowan, co-founder of Enapter, made the case for simpler and better public funding for cleantech manufacturing, in particular by focusing urgently on de-risking instruments which can help European innovators to compete on a level playing field by freeing up precious working capital. One clear theme from the day: the role of ambitious policymaking to massively increase funding for the most promising clean technologies in Europe. In the words of Kurt Vandenberghe, “We have made the regulatory case. Now, we need to make the business case." With COP28 now well underway, it is a great time to reflect on how addressing climate change and achieving our net zero ambitions demands an interdisciplinary approach. The Institute of Physics have published their flagship report titled "Physics Powering the Green Economy" this week, (our own co-director Thomas Scott was an advisor!), which lays out the ways in which physics has played its part and will continue to do so in the future. Page 12 of the report highlights the role of nuclear in this space, noting that "nuclear power is a core part of the transition away from fossil fuels". However, the message is loud and clear throughout the entire piece: innovation, research and development in nuclear must be a priority for physicists in the UK and Ireland, and nuclear power generation is a vital supplement to renewable sources if we are to achieve Net Zero by 2050. We definitely recommend reading this report! Find it here: https://lnkd.in/egAtWKWV ⚛💡✅

Linked to our launch, I’ve been thinking on how to best support the Wales Green Economy Plan in schools here in Wales. It’s going to involve incorporating sustainability practices into the education process, its operations, and a wider community engagement. Here are some ways I think schools in Wales can contribute: · Curriculum Integration · Hands-On Learning · Teacher Training · Energy Efficiency · Waste Reduction and Recycling · Partnerships with Local Businesses · Green Infrastructure · Community Engagement · Student-Led Initiatives · Monitoring and Reporting These bullet points need fleshing out, obviously, but by integrating these practices, schools can play a significant role in fostering a green economy and will educate the next generation about the importance of sustainability.

This Thursday: "The Green Giants: Industry in 2050" Panel Discussion - organised by SMASH Researchers! Charlotte Nevin and Ava Sjoberg have been part of a team which have organised "The Green Giants: Industry in 2050," a free online panel discussion, part of this year’s Festival of Debate series in partnership with Grantham Centre for Sustainable Futures University of Sheffield. This online event is guaranteed to give an exciting perspective into industry’s shift to a greener future. The panel features notable CBE academics: Prof Rachael Rothman, Prof Solomon Brown, Dr Fanran Meng, and Prof Joan Cordiner FREng, FRSE, FIChemE, C Eng, as well as industrial experts from ABB. Topics of discussion will include hydrogen use, electrification, and other pathways that industries are adopting to move towards net-zero emissions. This discussion is a wonderful opportunity to see how some of the great work in our department can be applied in real-world scenarios and to understand the technical, economic, and moral complexities involved in such a transition. The event will take place online on Thursday 16th May from 14:00-15:30 UK time. Last week, our team had the privilege to attend the World Water-Tech Innovation Summit, a truly eye-opening event that brought together more than 500 senior international stakeholders from the #watersector. The summit provided an invaluable platform for networking, and we had the opportunity to engage with #waterutilities, other #innovators and #investors.🚰💵 There were thought-provoking panellists, insightful case studies, and controversial opinions (like the investment momentum in the water sector innovation landscape) which sparked positive debates. Among the panel sessions, two key takeaways stood out: 1️⃣👉Acceleration is needed to achieve the water sector's #netzeroemissions goals: The attendees were quite pessimistic (about 95%) that the sector would achieve net-zero targets (against Tom Freyberg's prediction). Panellists presented initiatives such as carbon credits, voluntary emissions reduction schemes, and regulatory requirements for measuring emissions that underscored the sector's commitment to achieving net zero emissions. However, collaboration, innovation, and investment are crucial for accelerating progress towards carbon neutrality. 2️⃣👉 Enhanced focus on water quality and micro-pollutants: The panel emphasized the importance of safeguarding freshwater health and protecting waterways from contaminants. In particular, the focus was on strategies to address emerging contaminants like PFAS (Ronit Erlitzki, PhD.) Regulatory measures, stakeholder engagement, and technological advancements are key drivers for this. 🥇The organization of the event was top-notch, thanks to the superb efforts of Rethink Events and the key partner, UK government, which facilitated numerous networking opportunities and fostered both formal and informal conversations. 🤝It was good to see familiar faces like Bluemethane, Aganova, Imagine H2O, as well as forge new inspiring connections such as Permalution, Water Warriors Inc. and many more who are driving innovation and change in the sector. #watertech #innovationsummit #netzero

As the effects of climate change grow more palpable each year, the urgency to take action has never been greater. The European Union (EU) with its Green Deal aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030. Yet this target depends on the early adoption of innovations in clean technologies. To get to know more insights on how to commercialise these technologies, we are excited to invite you to the online event " Bringing Cleantech Innovation to Market," hosted by the Observatory on Patents and Technology at the European Patent Office (EPO). In collaboration with the European Investment Bank (EIB), we have conducted a new economic study shedding light on the challenges faced by companies aiming to bring clean technologies to the forefront. The study uses patent data from the EPO and provides fresh evidence from a new survey to clean tech businesses in Europe and the US. Join us as we unveil the primary findings of this new study. You will hear firsthand from innovative companies in clean and sustainable technologies. Plus, gain valuable perspectives from policymakers and practitioners on the current landscape and future perspectives. Let's come together to drive change and pave the way for a greener, more sustainable tomorrow. Mark your calendars and be a part of the conversation shaping the future of clean innovation in Europe!
