The #AIAct is a huge milestone for the EU!        Regulating a technology in constant evolution is challenging, but science is at the heart of EU policies. Independent, evidence-based research produced by the Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) has been fundamental in informing the AI Act.       Scientists have contributed to the Act by:   ✔ Researching the societal impact of algorithms to provide scientific ground to policy.   ✔ Providing a clear terminology for key concepts.   ✔ Suggesting criteria to classify AI systems based on risk.   ✔ Proposing a framework for the documentation of high-risk AI use cases.   ✔ Shaping a set of harmonised AI standards with European standardisation bodies.       The AI Act sets the bar for regulating artificial intelligence worldwide. Excessively high or low temperatures presently cause 407,000 fatalities a year in Europe. This may increase by the end of this century. Our scientists worked on the first pan-European assessment revealing that, without additional adaptation measures, this might mean a 13.5% increase in temperature-related deaths. Not every country is impacted the same: ❄Cold-related deaths are currently 2.5X more frequent in the east than in the west, and 🔥 Heat-related deaths are over 6X more common in the south than in the north. On 19 August, the European Health Security Committee held an important meeting on #Mpox outbreak. Since 2022 the EU has been carefully following the situation ensuring research efforts contribute to contain the outbreak, helping to understand the virus strains and ensuring accurate diagnostics tests. A joint effort between the VEO project & the Global Health EDCTP3 project GREAT-LIFE has contributed significantly to global efforts to contain the outbreak. In March 2024, these projects performed a genomic sequencing of the Mpox virus strains, gaining valuable insights into these strains and testing their compatibility with existing diagnostic methods. By confirming that current molecular assays can detect these strains effectively, this research helps in improving our ability to identify and to understand the virus. As we continue to navigate the Mpox outbreak, ongoing research efforts will play a critical role in informing strategies for prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. Explore more 👉 tinyurl.com/yc83svhd

✨ Measuring societal impact of research with the Impact Track tool! But what is this tool? Research across the globe is contributing to addressing complex societal challenges. Effective impact measurement and management are crucial to truly valorise knowledge and to improve and sustain new solutions. However, this remains a significant challenge for many organisations.
