With recent backsliding on climate policies, it’s easy to be pessimistic about the #EUelections coming up tomorrow. Despite the tough circumstances, we still hold the power to shape the future for the better. Let’s not lose sight of the amazing progress we’ve made in the last five years. An ambitious, comprehensive pan-European climate programme seemed a distant prospect in 2019. But today we have exactly that, in the form of the landmark EU Green Deal. The Green Deal didn’t happen by chance, but because millions of citizens used their right to vote at the last European elections. Polling tells us a majority of voters across the political spectrum still desire more ambitious climate policy and would support a raft of concrete measures to bring down emissions. Your vote is your voice in this crucial dialogue. Recently, even more so - due to my work in carbon removals, I am tracking developments in the EU around climate very closely. (Btw, a good one to follow for developments in CDR, incl. EU, is Sebastian Manhart.) 🌳 In the last two years, the EU has made tremendous progress in the area of climate in general, but also specifically in CDR. It is absolutely admirable how many smart people are dedicated to finding solutions for climate. 💡 Even now, not everyone in parliament is progressive and getting solutions through takes a lot of time, energy and a good understanding of the various positions. I can't imagine how much more difficult this would be with a shift to the right. 𝐒𝐨 𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐝𝐨 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐯𝐨𝐭𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐟 𝐉𝐮𝐧𝐞. In many industrialised countries, an issue once peripheral to hard-fought election battles has moved to the centre. European union (EU) voters frequently cite climate change and energy among the three issues most important to them. Some say that climate is currently being weaponised and as a result net zero targets have now become a wedge issue, either way the climate agenda has now become central [to politics] and shall play a major role in 60 upcoming elections in 2024.

So, we need you to vote for politicians and parties that offer real solutions for people and nature! #votefutureEU #EUelections

🌍 Title: 2024 EU Elections: A Turning Point for Climate Action In the face of escalating climate crises and extreme weather events, the upcoming 2024 EU elections stand as a crucial opportunity for change. The European Green Deal initiated in 2019 was a significant step, but much more needs to be done. The next five years are pivotal. We must prioritize an economy that reduces our dependency on fossil fuels and embraces the benefits of healthy ecosystems. It's essential to address inequalities, ensuring that vulnerable groups and small businesses aren't disproportionately burdened by climate actions. Leaders must resist calls for environmental deregulation. Our commitments to limit global warming to 1.5°C and reverse nature loss are already behind schedule. The 2024 EU elections are our chance to push for a sustainable, equitable future.
