INTERREG initiatives have tackled issues affecting young individuals, such as unemployment, subpar employment opportunities, and the demand for additional skills. 📈Data indicates that numerous young people in the Western Balkans (WB6) could gain advantages from a range of projects. 👩💻👩🔬👨💼 However, how exactly is INTERREG addressing these critical regional concerns? Watch this video to discover how you can reap the rewards. 🚀 This video was produced in the framework of "Raising awareness on the Youth Manifesto in the Western Balkan" project supported by DG Regio and implemented by Cooperation and Development Institute. https://lnkd.in/d9xUNFrN

Today, the directors of the three EU offices within the Northern Sparsely Populated Areas (NSPA) met with Nicola de Michelis, Deputy Director-General at the European Commission's Directorate-General for Regional Policy. They handed over a position on the future of regional support adopted by the NSPA steering group. Max Englund from North Sweden European Office, Kari Aalto from East & North Finland EU Office, and Nils Kristian Sørheim Nilsen from North Norway European Office, alongside Nicola de Michelis who received the position from Mikael Janson, North Sweden European Office. A productive discussion took place regarding important resources for the regions in the European Arctic during a time of several challenges in many areas, both globally and locally. The EU can do much, but the real work takes place on local and regional levels, and the EU's regional support is what connects local and regional efforts to contribute to the overall development and strengthening of Europe. Therefore, it is appreciated to have an ongoing close dialogue with the European Commission's leading responsible representatives. Currently, the EU's upcoming long-term budget which includes different support mechanisms for development is being prepared, and it is crucial to participate in that discussion to consider the specific conditions of northern Sweden. Much suggests that there will be fewer such resources in the EU, making it even more important that what remains is truly useful.

It is always a pleasure and interesting to meet with the directorates of the European Commission to discuss our positions on different matters! Our work on how to shape EU’s future #cohesionpolicy is carrying on and here we are presenting our positions at DG Regio together with other #european capital #cities and #regions #CCRN. To mention a few points, the Capital Cities and Regions Network #CCRN: i) are convinced that Cohesion policy needs to continue strengthening #economic , #social and #territorial cohesion for all regions and cities in the post-2027 programming period. ii) support a strong #urban and metropolitan dimension providing solutions for the development of sustainable and innovative urban areas (cities, including city centres, and their commuting zones). iii) believe that European territorial cooperation must remain a key objective of post-2027 cohesion policy. As a proud member of the Capital Cities and Regions Network (CCRN), the Helsinki EU Office participated in an exchange with members of the European Commission, DG Regio. In this exchange, we highlighted the following aspects: 1️⃣ Cities need to be better taken into account when designing the next MFF and the Cohesion Policy. Currently, cities receive less than 10% of total funds. 2️⃣ The future cohesion policy should be place-designed and place-based. We see a trend towards centralization at the national level in Europe. 3️⃣ Countries and regions bordering Russia should be taken into account in future financial policies. These areas are heavily affected by the EU sanctions against Russia. Our director, Janne Leino, mentioned, for example, Kymenlaakson liitto | Regional Council of Kymenlaakso, where sanctions have affected the region's tourism, transportation, and also the cessation of EU-Russia programs.
