Following the release of our second "Biomethane Brief" last week, which explored the sector's evolving market design and the associated challenges and opportunities for industry players, we are excited to continue our series with the publication of our third brief. This new edition will explore the increasing demand for "sustainable" feedstock and how biomethane producers need to strategically adapt in response. The strong development of bioenergies, driven by an increasing willingness to pay and the introduction of supportive market mechanisms, will likely generate significant pressure on feedstock sourcing. Even though there is considerable production potential from sustainably sourced feedstock, competition is already witnessed in some local biomethane markets. Some comments: 🔹 Feedstock markets are complex and very local. Feedstock costs, gate fees, and contract lengths can vary significantly from one region to another, depending on local market conditions (particularly the supply/demand balance) 🔹Some markets are differentiating the value of biomethane based on its carbon intensity, which is largely driven by the feedstock mix. Pressure is likely to be particularly intense on the best-performing feedstock 🔹 In some specific markets subject to strong competition, a correlation between feedstock prices (spot prices) and biomethane prices has been observed 🔹 Many players are now targeting countries with lower competition for feedstock to benefit from a first-mover advantage (e.g., Spain, Poland) 🔹 Some feedstock providers have realized that the current supply/demand balance for bioenergy feedstock grants them stronger bargaining power. In this context, it is crucial for biomethane producers to deploy effective strategies to optimize their sourcing, reduce risk, and maximize value creation. The brief explores some of these options.

To think this 2022 accomplishment represents 1/2 of the total installed AD (RNG/biomethane) facilities in the U. S.. I will predict that the U. S. Industry will top 400 AD projects completed annually at our peak buildout period. The question to ask is how many are designed/built to be able to evolve with technology that will be discovered and utilized as we go through the future advancements? Also, what will be the percentage that go straight to BioLNG and transport it locally? Steven

Unlocking the Power of Biogas in Europe! 🌱 📈 Did you know that Europe witnessed the establishment of 254 new biogas plants in 2022? The growth potential is phenomenal! 🚀 🌍 Currently, Europe produces 18.4 bcm of biogas and biomethane combined. Excitingly, projections suggest that by 2030, this could double to 35-45 bcm. Fast forward to 2050, and we're looking at a potential fivefold increase, reaching a staggering 167 bcm. 💡 What's more, by 2050, this could cover up to 40% of the gas consumption in the EU, showcasing the pivotal role of biogas in our sustainable energy future. 📈 The biomethane movement is spreading across Europe, with 24 countries now hosting biomethane plants. 🎯 In 2022, biomethane production reached 4.2 bcm, showcasing a remarkable growth of almost 20%, with an installed capacity of 4.5 bcm. France, Italy, Denmark, and the United Kingdom experienced the most substantial growth in their biomethane production. 2022 marked a remarkable milestone with the fastest growth in active biomethane plants, showcasing an impressive increase of 254 plants compared to the previous year. 🚀 By the end of 2022, Europe was home to 1,323 biomethane producing facilities, with 1,124 located in the EU-27. 🔎 Zooming into infrastructure, 58% of active biomethane plants are connected to the distribution grid, while 17% are connected to the transport grid.  The numbers are in and the biomethane industry is more committed than ever to realise a vision for a greener and more sustainable Europe. 📌 EBA Statistical Report 2023: https://lnkd.in/dB-PVMUW #biogas #biomethane #REPowerEU
