The latest package of sanctions against Russia includes restrictions on the import of Russian LNG, marking a crucial move in reducing Europe's energy dependence. Yet, it's important to note that the #aluminium sector, a significant revenue source for Russia, remains untouched by these sanctions 🤔 ➡️ The European aluminium industry, bolstered by imports from diverse regions, has proven its ability to meet the continent's strategic raw material needs. It's time for the EU to extend its sanctions to include Russian aluminium, further diminishing the economic support for actions contrary to European values. #sanctions #rawmaterials

The first-ever Russian gas sanctions are a momentous step for the EU. However, one sector still generating billions for Russia has been left untouched in the 14th sanctions package—aluminium ❗ ➡ Over the past two years, Russia has raked in approximately €3.5 billion in revenue from #aluminium exports, directly contradicting the #G7's pledge to reduce Russian metal revenues. With EU production and imports from other regions, we can supply the European demand without having to rely on Russian imports. We continue to call for a comprehensive ban on Russian aluminium! #BanRussianaluminium

The EU's latest sanctions package hits Russian LNG imports, marking a key step in reducing Europe's energy reliance on Russia. But there's one major sector still largely untouched – Russian #aluminium. 🤔 ➡️ The European aluminium industry has proven it can manage without Russian imports, cutting dependence on Russian imports by 35% in 2023. Russia now holds just an 8% market share of the EU's aluminium ingot imports in 2024. 📉 It's time for the EU to go all in! Let’s extend sanctions to include all major aluminium product categories, from ingots to slabs and billets. This move will further cut economic support for actions against European values and boost our #madeineurope industry. 💪 We’ve shown that decoupling from Russia is possible – now, let’s make it happen fully! 📢

Europe should not overlook the Russian pipeline gas too. Slovakia and Austria still insist on continuation of transit of Russian gas after 2024 when the current transit contract expires. It even easier to impose sanctions on pipeline gas than LNG.
'The new measures could include restrictions on three Russian LNG projects, and on the re-export of Russian LNG from EU ports, the diplomats said. So far, Brussels has imposed a blanket ban on Russian coal and seaborne crude oil exports to the EU but has been unable to find consensus on gas restrictions amid opposition from countries like Hungary, which remain heavily reliant on imports from Moscow.'

🚨 The EU has imposed its first ever sanctions on Russian LNG shipments⛽️ The latest package prohibits Russian exporters from using EU ports to transfer #LNG between large tankers and smaller vessels bound for third countries. Though not a full ban, it targets a key revenue stream for Moscow's energy exports. 💰 With the EU seeking to replace cut-off Russian pipeline gas, LNG imports had increased since the Ukraine invasion. But concerns over supply shortages prompted this move to tighten sanctions while still meeting storage needs. 🏭⚠️ A smart strategic step to further squeeze Putin's war chest? Or too little, too late? 🚨 BREAKING: $2 Billion of Russian Oil Purchased in First Half of 2024* 🧭 Western countries are quietly buying Russian oil through a sanctions loophole, with imports from Turkish refineries on the rise. ⛽Despite banning nearly all Russian oil imports, countries can still purchase fuel if it's first processed in another country, such as Turkey. 🇹🇷 According to a recent analysis, Western allies purchased around $2 billion worth of fuel made from Russian oil in the first half of 2024. 🛢️This workaround has led to growing shipments of gasoline, diesel, and other products made from Russian crude oil in recent months. 🇪🇺The EU and its Western allies initially imposed sanctions to limit Russia's energy revenue, but this loophole undermines the effectiveness of these measures. ❓The development raises questions about the unity and resolve of Western nations in enforcing sanctions against Russia. #RussianOil #SanctionsLoophole #WesternAllies #EnergyPolitics

Sanctions are important, but Russian coal exports were already down Recent US and EU sanctions target Russia's coal giants, SUEK and Mechel, amid challenges in the energy payment landscape. With January exports (10.72 Mt) hitting their lowest since Feb 2019 and a modest rebound in February (12 Mt), Russian coal faces a tough market environment. Competition from Australia and Indonesia, combined with European import bans, logistical hurdles, and China's renewed tariffs, intensifies the struggle. The Colombia-China coal agreement further indicates sustained pressure on Russian exports. Kpler Insight forecasts a significant drop in #Russia's seaborne #coal exports in 2024, highlighting the compounded effect of geopolitical tensions and market dynamics. Stay ahead of the markets.
