Thanks to European Alliance to Save Energy (EU-ASE) for giving me and Xylem the opportunity to contribute to this great example of a multi-sector and public-private approach to win the environmental challenge together: environmental and economic performances can coexist thanks also to the digital transition

💬 The PROSPECT participatory lab organized during the European Week of Regions and Cities on "Access to finance for the local energy transition: how to move away from subsidies?" highlighted common challenges and innovative solutions for local authorities. In particular, it emerged that small municipalities face barriers in accessing financial resources, and need additional infrastructure and knowledge. Innovative financing is a crucial tool for accelerating a sustainable energy transition, with growing momentum in Europe's regions and cities to understand and adopt these models. However, it is clear that local authorities need more support, and regulatory conditions need to be harmonized across EU member states to offer regions equal opportunities to effectively address their climate and energy challenges. Joined CTV News Power Play on Friday to chat about the positive outcomes that the Prime Minister reached with EU leaders at the Canada-EU summit last week. it was a reaffirmation on the importance of climate not only to the Canadian economy but also to our foreign policy. On the other hand? Pierre Poilievre looked unserious all week - blocking the signing of the Canada-Ukraine FTA on the basis of the inclusion of a carbon pricing clause (h/t not only has Ukraine already signed this deal they need a carbon pricing mechanism in place to join the EU). Some of the takeaways from the summit: - Developing a road map for green hydrogen including the EU commitment to scoping and building the demand side in Europe, including the launch of a $1.2B fund by the EU meant to subsidize the price of production to put green hydrogen closer to par with hydrogen produced with fossil fuels. - Final negotiations which will see Canada join Horizon Europe a $100B scientific and innovatjon research program which will widen the colabor and funding scope open for Canadian researchers. - A finalized deal which will see De Havvilland Canadair water bombers built in Alberta and shipped to Europe to help in its efforts to fight wildfires.

⚡ Insights from CERRE's latest event on Energy Solidarity ⚡ Last week, CERRE hosted a breakfast with Research Fellow Catherine Banet, diving into her latest research on the evolving concept of energy solidarity. The discussion, moderated by Annika Brack, explored the importance of this concept in the context of European energy integration and crisis response. Banet's insights illuminated the multifaceted layers of energy solidarity, from crisis assistance to fostering integrated European energy systems. The discussion underscored the pivotal role of cross-border infrastructure and deeper market integration in advancing and enforcing energy solidarity. Looking ahead to the next EU Commission mandate, participants e.g., pointed at optimising trade, streamlining permitting and planning rules to meet collective needs. For a deeper dive ➡ Catherine Banet’s chapter on “Legal mechanisms to ensure energy solidarity in international and EU law” can be found and read in Cecilia Bailliet (ed.), Research Handbook on International Solidarity Law”, Edward Elgar, April 2024. #EnergySolidarity #REPowerEU #EuropeanEnergy
