Apparently....it's Neurodiversity Celebration Week! Not that you would know it due to the tiny amount of bumf floating around online. Nevertheless, I did read this post on BBC Sport which was an incredible insight into an incredible woman who has coped with Autism (undiagnosed until recently) and misdiagnosed bi-polar, yet has shone through and become one of Britain's best rowing talents. Caragh McMurtry's story is really inspirational to which I could relate my own experiences and struggles with poor diagnosis and lifelong neurodiversity. But, against what many think, Caragh and my struggles are what makes us unstoppable. Yes, we have blips and tics, ups and downs, distractions and noise, but we also have the ability to focus and deliver amazing results. I was once ashamed to speak about my neurodiversity, and also struggled through much of my life misdiagnosed and more scarily, undiagnosed. I am not even sure my current diagnosis and treatments are accurate, but it has allowed me to build knowledge, resilience, tools and coping mechanisms to manage my life, socially and working, in a better way. Reading Caragh's story, simple amplifies certain issues in the world and I hope this week gets more press and attention. Remaining #calm in the face of turmoil is an incredible strength even if it's perceived as being aloof #poise 2. #Responsibility is a decision influenced, not determined, by age 3. Dishonesty is a sure-fire way to destroy any #relationship, especially with oneself #maninthemirror 4. #Occasionaltreats can be a form of recognition; regular treats defeats this purpose 5. It is abhorrent for a healthy, able-bodied adult to place a burden on others when they're perfectly capable of earning a living themselves #getoffthecouch 6. It's a real watershed moment when, as a parent/leader/teacher/elder/coach/ [fill in the blank], there's the realisation that it's not #allaboutyou 7. Learning and growth happens in that sweet spot between pressure and boiling point #faceyourfears #pushthrough 8. Being a #productive, #contributing human isn't all about paid work 9. As someone who is autistic, and also a rower (give or take), I was unsurprisingly drawn to this article. Having read it, I can see (based on my experience) how the job of recreating the perfect rowing stroke each time might resonate with some autistic people, but I hadn’t really thought before about the issues neurodivergent people face in professional sport. Clearly I need to let go of a few more preconceptions. Was good to see a relatively positive ND-related article in the mainstream press, though more focus on the benefits neurodivergence brings would have been nice. Clearly lots here that applies for ND people more widely, including the need for role modelling, and the benefits of sharing experiences. #neurodiversitycelebrationweek https://lnkd.in/e9Fnpy9u
