Nanotech Pioneers Compete: The Evolution of the International Nano Olympiad The International Nano Olympiad (INO) returns for its second edition as Nano Kebangsaan 2024 in Selangor, Malaysia. This prestigious event, initiated by the Iran Nanotechnology Innovation Council (INIC), gathers the brightest minds in nanotechnology from around the world to compete and innovate. Teams will showcase their groundbreaking ideas, fostering international collaboration and advancements in nanotechnology. The International Nano Olympiad (INO), initiated by the Iran Nanotechnology Innovation Council (INIC) in 2014, is a premier global competition in nanotechnology. Bringing together teams from across the world, the INO encourages advancements in science, innovation, and business through educational workshops, technical visits, and presentations. The concept of the INO was first proposed by INIC experts in 2014 and officially approved in 2015. Following extensive planning, the first INO meeting in Tehran, Iran, in May 2016 established the competition's regulations and objectives. The inaugural INO was held in 2018 in Tehran, featuring nine international teams competing on themes like wastewater management. The second INO will be part of Nano Kebangsaan 2024, from October 7th to 11th, at the Bangi Resort Hotel in Selangor, Malaysia. This event includes the ISAMN Conference, NanoSym Conference, ANF Commercialization Workshop, and the 7th EU-Asia Dialogue. Competitors will focus on alternative energies, with key activities including an opening ceremony, technical visits, pitching sessions, and a closing ceremony. As nanotechnology shapes the future, the INO fosters international cooperation and innovation. For example, some specific molecules that can detect viruses will 'recruit' each other as soon as they detect a virus particle. Huskens wants to take that biological process of self-assembling molecules out of the biological context to innovate in nanotechnology. By imitating nature, he wants to design better biosensors and new high-tech, self-assembling materials. Huskens will develop new techniques to build materials at the smallest scale. History of Nanotechnology The era of nanotechnology is firmly upon us. We now have the tools and techniques in our grasp to manipulate matter in ways that seemed fantastical little over a half century ago. Although we may think of nanotechnology as a contemporary subject, the use of nanomaterials in human objects and paraphernalia can be traced back to ancient times. We will begin by defining nanotechnology, before turning to look its history, the tools that have advanced the field in twentieth century and beyond, and some key milestones in the field.
