It was a great honor to receive the inaugural Global Innovator Lectureship Award from the IBS Center for NanoMedicine (CNM) at Yonsei University. The award recognizes world leaders in translational research leveraging micro & nanotechnologies to improve human health. I shared our work developing inertial #microfluidics and deformability #cytometry that underlies Cytovale's IntelliSep early sepsis diagnostic test, as well as our most recent #labonaparticle technology to speed up translation of the most sensitive microfluidic assays. My thanks to IBS CNM Director Jinwoo Cheon, Professors Jae-Hyun Lee, and Minsuk Kwak for hosting me and sharing the world class research at the IBS CNM. Among other work, I would encourage the community to closely follow their innovative approaches to #magnetogenetics. The magnetic #nanoparticles they synthesize are uniquely responsive to magnetic torques, transmitting forces to underlying mechanosensitive ion channels, and avoiding the challenges with creating large magnetic field gradients within tissues that other techniques suffer from, including techniques we previously pursued. Mechanosensitive ion channels, not normally present in particular tissues, can also be genetically encoded to localize the effects, e.g. to particular types of neurons in a region of the brain. There is the potential to overcome a lot of the downsides of #optogenetics, such as low penetration depth, with this new technique. During my trip to South Korea, I also caught up with my colleague and friend, Professor Sunghoon Kwon, at Seoul National University and his latest startup Meteor Biotech. I was given a demo of their new CosmoSort instrument which enables rapid picking of single cells or cell clusters from histology or cytology slides for downstream deep genomic or other molecular analyses. A really exciting new technology for #spatialbiology, clinical diagnostics, and elucidating the links between morphological arrangements of cells and genetics. He has also made fantastic progress in the realm of rapid antimicrobial susceptibility testing with QuantaMatrix's dRAST instrument. From detecting biomarkers in sweat to diagnosing lung cancer Two of our researchers, Emma Moonen and Joric Oude Vrielink, have been appointed as new Faculty of Impact fellows. With the Faculty of Impact the selected researchers with entrepreneurial ambitions will receive two years of intensive and personal guidance from experts in entrepreneurship, intellectual property and investment. They keep (or get) an appointment at their university for that period, but are exempted from administrative and teaching obligations. Read full article here: https://lnkd.in/dhghAG9S Huge congratulations to all the co-authors, with special recognition to Danilo and Enric! 👏👏👏 ⏹️ Capacitive immunosensing at gold nanoparticle-decorated reduced graphene oxide electrodes fabricated by one-step laser nanostructuration. In this study, we have pioneered the development of a novel capacitive biosensor tailored for glycoproteins, leveraging laser-engraved reduced graphene oxide electrodes decorated with AuNPs. The fabrication involved precise laser-scribing of GO-Au3 films, yielding rGO-AuNP electrodes seamlessly transferred onto a PET sheet using a press-stamping technique and subsequently functionalized with specific bioreceptors. Initially, we validated the biosensor's performance by successfully detecting human IgG antibodies, thus confirming its biomolecular recognition capabilities. Subsequently, our focus shifted to detecting CA-19-9 glycoprotein, a critical clinical biomarker, thereby showcasing the practical applicability of our capacitive biosensing approach. Our nanobiosensor demonstrated robust monitoring of CA-19-9 glycoprotein concentrations relevant to clinical contexts. The biosensor's selectivity was verified by evaluating potential cross-reactivity with various biomolecules. Our comprehensive testing established its ability to discern CA-19-9 glycoprotein with minimal interference from other analytes. These findings underscore the precision, specificity, and reliability of rGO-AuNP biosensors in accurately quantifying glycoproteins, highlighting their reproducibility and stability. Their adaptability to detect a wide range of biomolecules positions them as versatile tools for point-of-care applications, ultimately promising to enhance healthcare accessibility and patient-centered outcomes significantly. Just because it's spring break doesn't mean the science stops! It's our pleasure to host Dr. Sébastien Côté from Université de Montréal this Thursday (3/14) for seminar (10:05 am, Dewey Hall)! His talk title is "Nanoscale #modeling of electronic #biosensors." His abstract is below. Hope to see you all there. Abstract: Electronic biosensors are increasingly critical in the biomedical field for the precise detection of a diverse array of biomarkers, including proteins and nucleic acids. Designing sensitive devices poses however significant challenges due to the intricate nanoscale interactions between the biosensor’s electronic circuit and the target biomarkers. Within my research group, we employ computational methods to elucidate the complex nanoscopic interactions that underpin the functionality of electronic biosensors. Our approach involves detailed atomistic modelling of the interface between the target biomarker and the electronic circuit. Then, we leverage advanced molecular dynamics techniques to exhaustively sample the interactions responsible for the electrical response of the biosensor. This predictive capability enables us to devise optimization strategies to improve biosensor performance. In this presentation, I will present our recent contributions to the development of electronic biosensors in collaboration with research groups fabricating them. These include biosensors made from functionalized nanomaterials, such as carbon nanotubes and graphene, and gold electrodes for detection of small molecules, enzymes linked to antimicrobial resistance, and nucleic acids associated with cancer.
