Bio-digital convergence We are not far off the time when cyborg cockroaches fitted with video cameras could be first responders sent to locate survivors trapped under the rubble of collapsed buildings. Researchers are already able to mount microchips and sensors onto cockroaches and other insects to control their motion by remote control. Cyborg cockroaches are a good example of the convergence of two domains that traditionally are thought of as separate: biology and digital technology. This is called bio-digital convergence. Bio-digital convergence is a vast, multidisciplinary field, covering everything from biomaterials to human augmentation. IEC has recently set up SyC BDC, a Systems level standardization Committee intended to facilitate outreach and influence the work on bio-digital convergence developed by the international standardization organizations and industry consortia, and thus facilitate the advancement and coordination of bio-digital convergence standardization. It will also identify and assess potential new forthcoming bio-digital convergence topics and problematics that may become relevant to standardization activities and recommend the appropriate course of actions to meet the needs of the global community. Exciting News! Our Paper Accepted in IEEE TBCAS! I'm happy to share that our paper “An Ultra-Low Power Fixed-Window Level Crossing ADC for ECG Recording” (Mahdi Ghasemi, Nassim Ravanshad, Hamidreza Rezaee-Dehsorkh) has been accepted in IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Circuits and Systems (TBCAS) (Early Access). https://lnkd.in/dzFwRJYs In this paper, a novel fixed-window level-crossing analog-to-digital converter (LCADC) is proposed for the ECG monitoring application. The proposed circuit is implemented using fewer comparators and reference levels compared to the conventional structure, which results in a decrease in complexity and occupied silicon area. Also, the power consumption is reduced considerably by decreasing the activity of the comparator. Simulation results show a 5-fold reduction in activity by applying the standard ECG signals to the proposed structure. A typical level-crossing-based R-peak-detection algorithm is applied to the output samples of the LCADC, which shows the effectiveness of using this type of sampling.

Pooling expertise, utilizing synergies – Integration of the Microdisplays and Sensors business unit of Fraunhofer FEP into Fraunhofer IPMS The business unit "Microdisplays & Sensors" of Fraunhofer FEP will be integrated into Fraunhofer IPMS as of January 1, 2024. Over the past ten years, the Microdisplays & Sensors business unit has developed into a globally successful and established player operating within the Fraunhofer FEP. The bundling of competencies and the simplified structures result in synergies that strengthen the research field, ensure faster further development and thus benefit customers and partners. The change allows the Fraunhofer FEP, as a process-oriented institute, to focus even more strongly on its expertise in electron beam and plasma technology. This transfer provides technological solutions for the growing demand for solutions for energy and sustainability as well as life science and environmental technologies for industry and society now and in the future. 📅 Tomorrow, Jose Miralles, Quantum Engineer at Qilimanjaro Quantum Tech, participates in #Teratec with a presentation on the work developed in the #CUCO project under the title "Benchmarking Energy Consumption of Quantum Computers" (2:35 pm): https://lnkd.in/eXaeac_C Present HPC centers are reaching their limits in computing capacity incurring huge overheads both in terms of price and energy demands. Quantum computation’s advantage is typically assessed based on computational runtimes. However, the concept of quantum advantage encompasses dimensions beyond speed, notably energy consumption. In this talk we will discuss our recent efforts in benchmarking the energy consumption of both HPC systems and superconducting-based quantum computers for various comparable tasks. We aim to consider every relevant aspect required in the execution process of both systems for a complete comparison. Part of these results have been developed in the context of Qilimanjaro Quantum Tech and Barcelona Supercomputing Center’s contribution in the Spanish CUCO project (cuco.tech/en), which aims to evaluate the capabilities of quantum computing in strategic industries, including its application in the path to a more sustainable way of doing heavy computations.
