How does the delay of the ITER project affect the future of energy? What challenges are now at the forefront? Hartmut Zohm explains the latest developments and their implications for fusion research. The ITER management has presented a plan that deals with the serious problems in a very intelligent way. It has not simply postponed the old deadlines, but has re-prioritised and reorganised work steps, which is possible because there are only problems with a small number of components. The plans have also been adapted to the current state of knowledge, so that tungsten is now being used as the material for the first wall instead of beryllium - a development that was only made possible by the research at ASDEX Upgrade. ITER will also have a much stronger plasma heater than originally planned. https://lnkd.in/d2DjMaBU

Good post! ⬇️ 🤔 … thin heat resistant carbide,
Translating science into successful applications is never a predictable path. Especially at the forefront of what is possible. What we know for sure is that providing novel sustainable energy sources will be vital to our future! #innovation
It is very disappointed news this pure lack of leadership and vision this is another failure pure waste of public money. As a Physicist I believe ITER over committed and we far to far from the reality
Thanks, Hartmut, for putting the new schedule in the right perspective!
It is exciting just to be able to follow ITER and other fusion news. Was a bit disappointed by the 10 year first plasma delay, but much less after accepting controlled tokamak fusion breakeven milestone achievement as a step by step news matter.
🤔 … heat resistant fusion ( spectrum shield ).
Good to know!

3moI believe that ITER problems that forcing ITER Organization leadership to postpone starting of research operations by 9 years are more engineering rather than conceptual. Tungsten tiles on first wall instead beryllium one is very minor modification. "Stronger heater"? Which one? Ohmic? Modifications in central solenoid CS? Ion cyclotron? NBI? One year ago or so I heard about problems on welding of vacuum vessel. Is that solved today? Having some experience in design and fabrication of large parts (not so large) I was wondered with design solution. Such a design is very complicate to fabricate and to keep that vacuum tight. What is real problem/problems?
