Electrification is able to solve many of the troubles today associated with the energy transition, and through Eurelectric's Electrification Action Plan we're showing EU Policy Makers how it could be done.

This plan should include a target of 35% electrification of final energy use across the EU by 2030, along with an electrification indicator in the #NECPs to track and drive progress. 2️⃣ Highlighting the invaluable benefits of electricity. 3️⃣ Increasing awareness about electricity's potential for cost savings. Electricity makes up only 23% of all the energy consumed in Europe, meaning that while the power sector is working hard to decarbonise electricity, large parts of the economy are still running on fossil fuels. Insightful work from Eurelectric to inform policymakers on what should be taken into consideration for a future #Electrification Action Plan EuropeOn and the whole Electrification Alliance call on the European Commission to publish an Electrification Action Plan within the 100 first days of its tenure, this new report provides more elements.

It’s excellent to see the publication of the Grid Action Plan, an important step in putting the decisive issue of Europe’s power infrastructure on the political map! Investing in Europe’s grids is a no regrets option: it will facilitate our energy transition, supercharge electrification and support millions of jobs across the continent whilst doing it. See below some of my thoughts and join me in calling to action now policymakers and regulators across countries. We must drive expansion whilst also facilitating competitive returns for operators, unlocking investments and maintaining momentum. I look forward to seeing the plan now being put to work!

𝗪𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝘄𝗼 𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀! As part of the Chemnitz Energy Efficiency and Climate Protection Network, we are making an important contribution to achieving the climate and energy policy goals of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Klimaschutz). 🍃 The aim was to save 18,300 MWh/a of final energy and 5.2 t CO2 e/a of greenhouse gas emissions from March 2022 to March 2024. In addition, we got honored for our outstanding network activities. 💡 The initiative of the federal government and the economy has the following targets for 2025: ➡️ Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 6 million tons ➡️ Saving up to 11 terawatt hours of final energy ➡️ Establishment of 300-350 new networks The initiative is an instrument of the National Action Plan on Energy Efficiency (NAPE 2.0). #sustainability #ecofriendly #networking #ksg #pcb #smartertogether

2024 will be the year of change for the European Union. Our 𝗘𝗨 𝗘𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼 highlights the 5 key points that will serve the next European Commission to power the energy transition ⚡ Download our Elections Manifesto here: https://lnkd.in/d62vaiTD In the next legislative term, Europe’s policymakers will have to: 1. Implement what has been agreed in the previous mandates. We need to double down on the implementation process of the necessary legislation to ensure we reach emissions reductions of 55% by 2030. Already agreed directives and regulations to achieve climate neutrality must be adopted nationally in a timely manner to facilitate long-term planning certainty. 2. Increase the rate of electrification to achieve decarbonisation Electricity is the most effective way to achieve decarbonisation as well as energy efficiency. Our #DecarbSpeedways study shows that the rate of electrification will need to reach around 50-70% by 2050 for Europe to reach climate neutrality. In the medium term, to achieve our REPowerEU ambitions, we need to already reach 35% by 2030. Europe must set both the right milestones and a clear plan to deliver that trajectory 3. Security of supply: accelerate renewable and clean power supply while addressing challenges of the new energy system #REPowerEU, the reform of the electricity market design and the NetZero Industry Act (#NZIA), have aimed at mitigating the challenges of the #energycrisis. We now have the opportunity for Europe’s industry and energy system to become more resilient and less exposed to external supply shocks with homegrown net-zero power supply. 4. #Grid4Speed: driving the expansion and digitalisation of electricity grids By 2030, over 80% of additional renewable electricity will be connected at the distribution level. We need to urgently invest in grids to be fit-for-purpose in an increasingly decarbonised, decentralised and digitalised power system. 5. Empower a transition serving all consumers The #energytransition should ensure that all customers, from energy-intensives to domestic consumers, can use and afford sustainable energy. We need to act now to remove key consumer barriers, engage consumers and transform their experience. Exciting developments unfold as the European Commission unveils the EU Action Plan for Grids, placing grids at the heart of the EU agenda. Eurelectric's President, Leo Birnbaum, weighs in on this pivotal moment: “It’s good to see that grids are now centre of the EU agenda. This plan is an excellent first step in future-proofing Europe’s power infrastructure with concrete actions to implement in two years from now. Higher transparency in grid data exchange and a more inclusive engagement between national authorities, system operators and civil society are valuable elements of this deal. We also appreciate that the Commission’s plan calls for a rapid agreement on the electricity market design reform with its provisions on enabling anticipatory grid investments. To this end, predictable regulatory principles are crucial to de-risk such investments by ensuring system operators are not penalised in cases of underutilised grid capacity built based on electrification forecasts. However, there is still room for improvement. Europe’s grids face an escalating number of threats from more frequent extreme weather events. This Action Plan should therefore acknowledge the need for more climate adaptation measure to make our infrastructure more resilient to climate change. Furthermore, while the Commission recognises that EU funds are currently under-utilised for local grids projects and suggests a new approach, concrete guidelines are needed to clarify how the new approach can ease funding access for distribution system operators’ projects. More robust measures may also be required to overcome supply chains bottlenecks. We call on the upcoming Belgian Presidency to ensure a proper endorsement of the EU Action Plan for Grids and ask EU countries to swiftly implement its actions to bring our electricity grids up to speed with the energy transition.” From plan to action, let's make it happen! 💪🔌 #Grids4Speed #EnergyTransition #ElectricityMarketDesign #ClimateResilience

The recent study from ENTSO-E investigates three hypothetical states of the #ElectricityTransmissionNetwork in the year 2030 and 2040, in the National Trends scenario based on National Energy and Climate Plans. "Needs exist everywhere in Europe, with a total of 64 GW of needs on close to 60 borders in 2030. These capacity increases represent about 2.4 billion euro of investment per year and would deliver a yearly increase in socio-economic welfare of 4.8 billion euro. By 2040, 24 GW of additional cross-border capacity increases on top of the increases identified for 2030, 41 GW of storage and 3 GW of CO2-free peaking units would be needed to support Europe’s move towards a carbon-free power system and ensure continuous and cost-effective access to electricity".
