Congratulations to Dr Islem Rekik, Dr Alice Malivert, and Dr Zhenzhu Li, who were awarded the AIMS-Imperial Education Seed Fund! 👏 The I-X team, alongside Dr Isambi Sailon Mbalawata and Dr Daniel Duviol Tcheutia (African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS)), received £10,000 to organise a workshop titled “Harnessing the Potential of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable Development”. The workshop will focus on how AI and Data Science can contribute to sustainable development in countries of the Global South, exploring three main topics: agriculture, health, and energy. 🌾🏥🌍 The event is scheduled to take place from 23 to 28 November at AIMS Cameroon in Limbe. The Imperial team expects that the workshop will not only encourage innovative interdisciplinary thinking but also lead to long-term engagement with the researchers from AIMS. Exploring New Dimensions in Scientific Research with Scoobot I am researcher from Algeria, and I am pleased to share my inspiring experience at the concluding day of the Scoobot grant sessions held on Thursday, October 10, 2024. This grant focused on artificial intelligence tools and how to utilize them to enhance scientific research and international publishing. A Fruitful and Content-Rich Session The session was filled with valuable information and interactive discussions. We explored how to form effective teams and use brainstorming to generate new and innovative ideas. We also learned how to employ artificial intelligence techniques to organize thoughts and data, making it easier to achieve accurate and reliable results. Practical Applications of the Scoobot Platform One of the highlights we discussed was using the Scoobot platform to link ideas with scientific references. This enabled us to access diverse sources, enriching our research with high quality. We also learned how to prepare reference lists accurately, which is a crucial element that enhances the credibility of academic research. A Comprehensive Learning Experience Under the guidance of Dr. Rania, the grant ambassador, we received an in-depth explanation of how to benefit from Scoobot tools to achieve the best outcomes in our research. Inspiration and guidance were present at every moment, motivating us to achieve more. Special Thanks to the Grant Team At the end of this session, I would like to express my deep gratitude to Dr. Mohamed, Dr. Rania, Dr. Samar, and all the team members who contributed to the success of this initiative. Their remarkable efforts and valuable expertise were essential in making this experience special and impactful. China's remarkable ascent as the world's leading nation for natural-science publications in the Nature Index is awe-inspiring. In fact, of the top 100 fastest-rising institutions between 2017 and 2022, only one is outside China - the Technical University of Munich. However, China's success often overshadows the progress made by other countries, such as India. India has made tremendous strides as the second fastest-rising country in the Nature Index, surpassing Australia to enter the top ten overall in the natural sciences for the first time. With the nation's recent Moon landing, India is determined to elevate its global position in science. The political tensions between the United States and China have had an adverse impact on their research collaborations. In light of this, increasing scientific partnerships between the US and India might prove beneficial to both nations. At the 3rd Doctoral Colloquium of the Cyprus Rectors’ Conference hosted by the University of Cyprus! ✨ We are privileged to host Nobel Laureate, Sir Christoforos Pissarides with his Speech “The future of work: Should workers be scared of artificial intelligence?” along with more than 80 PhD students presenting their research.   ↗ Professor Pissarides argued that the main challenge introduced by new technologies is not how to save jobs but the transition of workers to new activities. Technology he mentioned, has never been a reason for ending work, It has been a reason for restructuring work, usually for the better. Technological revolutions bring faster growth and structural change in labour markets.  AI is still in its early stages, and we must make sure that it is applied well! It has been an honor for me to collaborate with Oleksiy Boldyriev, Grygoriy Riy, Kateryna Shavanova, and Bohdan Hrushetskyi on the second "Science at Risk" project about science popularization in modern Ukraine. Considering the ongoing pandemic and the full-scale Russian invasion, we've conducted a comprehensive analysis of the state of science popularization in Ukraine. Our findings shed light on the challenges and opportunities faced by the sphere of popular science during these turbulent times. One of the key insights from our research is the lack of a formed understanding of the value of science popularization in Ukraine. This misunderstanding has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic and the state of war, further compounded by the proliferation of pseudoscientific concepts and ideas. To delve deeper into these issues, our analytical approach combined desk research with 15 expert half-structured remote interviews with science popularizers. Through this method, we've gained valuable insights into the current landscape and identified areas for improvement. Our white paper aims to spark dialogue, raise awareness, and ultimately drive positive change in the field of science popularization. By addressing these challenges head-on and capitalizing on the opportunities presented, we can pave the way for a more informed and scientifically literate society.
