Invasive Alien Species #IAS pose a major threat to native plants and animals in Europe as they: ⚠️ are one of the five major causes of biodiversity loss 📉 cause significant adverse impacts on the economy 🩺 affect the human health by spreading disease The EU is taking action to: 🟢 prevent unintentional introduction 🟢 ensure measures for the early detection 🟢 manage species that are already widely spread Learn more about it 👉 https://europa.eu/!xTxvYv

The Silent Extinction of Amphibians Amphibians are facing one of the most significant extinction crises of any species group, with 41% at risk of disappearing, according to the IUCN. A fungal disease called chytridiomycosis is wiping out populations globally, with habitat loss and climate change compounding the problem. Why Amphibians Matter: Ecosystem Health: Amphibians play a critical role in maintaining the balance of ecosystems, serving as both predators and prey. Medical Research: Amphibians are used in medical research to study regeneration, and their extinction could impact future scientific breakthroughs. Biodiversity: The loss of amphibians could lead to cascading effects throughout ecosystems, affecting plants, insects, and other animals. Protecting amphibians means protecting entire ecosystems. #Biodiversity #Conservation #WildlifeProtection #Amphibians

Beaver systems boost biodiversity, but do they also play a role in modification of zoonotic disease risk? Do they harbour and contribute to the spread of zoonotic pathogens? Or does the high biodiversity in beaver systems mitigate disease risk? These are some of the questions we are studying in the Swedish Case Study Area.

Invasive alien species are animals and plants that are accidentally or deliberately introduced into new natural environments, causing damages and posing a growing threat in Europe ⚠️ Currently, 41 plants and 47 animals are listed as #IAS of EU concern. From raccoons and common kingsnakes to Asian hornets and some types of algae, Invasive Alien Species are disrupting 🇪🇺 biodiversity and ecosystems - but how to stop this? In 2015, the EU introduced a regulation with actions to prevent their introduction, contain their spread through early detection and rapid eradication, and impose trade bans. #Biodiversity is absolutely vital for the processes that support all life on Earth, including humans. However loss of biodiversity can jeopardize health & ecosystems and escalate zoonotic diseases, Each one of us needs to #BePartOfThePlan to #ProtectBiodiversity.

One country can never protect a species, when the species travels across borders. It is time that nation states look beyond their borders not only in terms of trade, but also when it comes to conservation. Prioritising profit and development has devastating consequences on global ecosystems and ultimately threatens our own survival on this plant. It is time for a new economic system based on sustainability and coexisting with nature. #sustainability #conservation #wildlife #nature
Migratory animals are key to planetary health – and they’re increasingly under threat. The World Economic Forum’s Global Risks Report 2024 cites biodiversity and ecosystem collapse as a major threat. Learn more: https://ow.ly/MstS50RarCJ

Biological invasions are so frequent nowadays it is found in every continent and island and even in the oceans. In fact, invasive species are recognised as one of the leading global threats to native biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. Prof. Julie Coetzee speaks about aquatic invasions and why it's such a problem. You can find the full video looking at some of the causes, concerns and solutions to this problem, our website and YouTube . #Africa #Conservation #conservationstudents

📢 Today marks the #InternationalDayOfBiologicalDiversity. It’s a moment for us to reflect on the ways that people are deeply connected to the natural world around them, a point highlighted by a recent study showing biodiversity loss to be the biggest driver of emerging infectious diseases in people. 🔬 This meta-analysis looked at nearly 1,000 studies from around the world. They examined multiple issues and found that biodiversity loss is the biggest environmental factor for disease outbreaks. Did you know? 🦠 Three-quarters of emerging diseases in humans are zoonotic, meaning they are passed from wild animals. 🌲 This occurs as we disrupt their habitats, bringing them into contact with humans, and removing them from their natural environments, putting them in close proximity to other species in bushmeat markets and other scenarios. Let’s protect our wildlife and keep them where they belong – in their natural habitats. Keep them wild, keep us safe.
