This week in the science -> art -> science -> art circle... I needed a visualisation approach to better identify terrain features for a 3D map view. This resulted in multiple efforts around channel segmentation on an inverted DEM (great! however neglects peaky ridgelines), topographic position index computation, and has so far landed on geomorphons - a method of terrain classification using computer vision approaches (close to home! with a history of applying computer vision approaches to sea ice classification). This isn't the finished product, just a fun intermediate result. It's not quite where I want it to be - like all landscape analysis, there's an interaction around scales that work, and which artefacts you're happy to live with... ....and far. too. much. visual. distraction. I have to actually finish a map series. Super cool tool. Concept Cartography The practice of visually mapping and connecting ideas and concepts to explore their relationships and generate new insights.

In this exercise,I learned some techniques for authoring 3D maps. I improved the ground surface of the scene by using multiple data sources; I used extrusion to create 3D building shapes; I configured procedural symbols for facade rendering; I configured a pre-built tree layer; you built a realistic layer for street furniture; and throughout it all, you relied heavily on feature attributes to provide critical symbology properties, such as size, number of floors, and rotation. The types of 3D maps that you build using ArcGIS Pro will vary greatly upon the type of data that you have available. However, this exercise has shown that you can go a long way, even with a relatively simple set of well-attributed 2D data. #ArcGISPro #MOOC #Cartography #GIS

Your Data into Google Photorealistic 3D Tiles via clipping regions with CesiumJS. 👏 One use case that I've discussed a lot around this new functionality is putting in new or planned buildings with the Google data. With this new capability in CesiumJS (similar to what is already available in Cesium for Unreal), you can clip out an existing area and drop in your CAD/BIM file. From there, the sky is the limit with all of the additional capabilities available with CesiumJS.
