The Canadian Mountain Assessment is published! You can access it for free here: https://lnkd.in/eUYaY-A6 🏔 "The Canadian Mountain Assessment is a ground-breaking work of knowledge co-creation that showcases the diversity and significance of mountain areas in Canada, clarifies challenges and opportunities facing mountain systems, and will inform and inspire future mountain-focused research, relationships, and action. [It] provides a first-of-its-kind look at what we know, do not know, and need to know about mountain systems in Canada. The assessment is based on insights from Indigenous knowledges of mountains, as well as findings from an extensive assessment of pertinent academic literature. Its inclusive knowledge co-creation approach brings these multiple forms of evidence together in ways that enhance our collective understanding of mountains in Canada, while also respecting and maintaining the integrity of different knowledge systems. " Just as it feels to be surrounded by mountains, I am humbled to have had the opportunity to listen to and learn from others, to explore the understanding of mountains as Homelands (Chapter 3 in the CMA), and to contribute even a small amount to this important project.

Happy New Year. As many of you know, some misguided fellows are making things difficult on the usual sea lanes (Red Sea and Suez Canal) used to bring our bounty here to the UK. Hopefully it won't cause too much trouble, but there may be some delays. Given the need to ensure our customers get the best service available, we have looked at the options. The current diversion route, via the Cape of Good Hope or the pointy bit at the bottom of Africa, is around 11,800 nautical miles or just under 3,500 nautical miles more than the Suez canal route. You could go completely the other way via Panama, the canal not the hat, but that makes the distance around 20,435 nautical miles. Or, there is a rail option, but the cost is at least a tenfold increase over the sea option. For now we are going to stick with our current shipping arrangements and accept the average 10 days extra at sea for the diversion.

Take a look at one of the largest rivers in the world, the St. Lawrence River, which empties into a gulf and estuary of the same name. The Great Lakes and the center of North America are connected to the Atlantic Ocean by almost 1,200 kilometers of navigable water provided by the St. Lawrence River. It further serves as a crucial supply route and artery for the Canadian economy. #makehomecanada #canadaeconomy #settleincanada #atlanticcanada
